Chapter 13 - The Detonator on the Ridge

The wind howling off the northern cliffs whipped Elaine’s thermal blanket violently around her shoulders as she, Julian, Clara, and Detective Vance emerged from the dark stone exit tunnel. Below them, the raging ocean waves crashed furiously against the jagged black rocks, their white foam illuminated by the flickering orange glow of the burning Sterling estate half a mile away. The upper mansion was a towering inferno, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the stormy night sky. But the fire wasn't the most dangerous thing on the ridge.

Standing ten yards away near the edge of the precipice, soaking wet and shivering violently in his ruined black tuxedo, was Edward. In his right hand, illuminated by the flashing red light of a small handheld device, was the master legacy detonator.

"Don't take another step!" Edward screamed, his voice cracking hysterically over the roar of the wind and waves.

"If you move closer, I'll blow the remaining methane reserves beneath the foundation! We all go down into the ocean together!"

Detective Vance slowly lowered his weapon, keeping his hands visible as he took a cautious half-step forward.

"It's over, Edward," Vance commanded, his voice steady and authoritative.

"The federal accounts are seized, the board has disbanded, and your brother is already in custody back at the access tunnel. You have nowhere left to run."

Edward let out a high-pitched, manic laugh, his eyes wide and unhinged as he stared down at the small red button on the device.

"Run? I don't need to run! Sterling Enterprises was built with my blood, not Arthur's!" Edward shrieked, pointing a shaking finger directly at Elaine.

"She ruined everything! She and that bastard child stole the entire inheritance the moment they crawled out of the maternity ward!"

Julian instinctively stepped behind his mother, his small hand gripping the fabric of her thermal blanket, his pale blue eyes locked on the detonator in Edward’s hand. He didn't feel fear anymore—only a sharp, cold clarity that mirrored the very composure Clara had taught him in the dark.

"You didn't build an empire, Edward," Julian called out, his young voice cutting cleanly through the howling wind with shocking volume.

"You built a tomb. And you're the only one left inside it."

Edward’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated rage. He raised the detonator higher, his thumb hovering directly over the red button.

"You little parasite! I'll wipe you and your mother off the face of the earth right now!"

Before Edward could press the trigger, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the rocks directly behind him. Clara stepped out from the shadows of a jagged boulder, holding a heavy iron wrench she had picked up in the boiler room, her posture entirely unyielding.

"Drop it, Edward," Clara commanded, her voice terrifyingly calm.

Edward spun around in panic, his boot slipping on the wet grass near the sheer drop of the cliff. He threw his arms out for balance, but the momentum was too great. The detonator slipped from his freezing fingers, tumbling over the edge of the precipice and disappearing into the crashing dark waves below just as Edward lost his footing and plunged backward into the abyss.
