Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Raincoat

The sudden drop in temperature was instantaneous, as if the torrential rain outside had found a way to bleed through the sealed glass of the tall, arched windows. Julian’s tearful gaze remained locked on the dark figure lurking in the shadows of the veranda, but before he could utter a single word of warning, Detective Vance’s heavy hand clamped down on Arthur Sterling’s shoulder. The flash of a camera lens flared blindingly against the rain-streaked glass, a stark white glare that exposed the terrified, pale faces of the high-society guests who had spent millions buying their silence.
"Secure the perimeter!" Vance barked into his shoulder radio, his eyes narrowing as he spotted the dripping silhouette retreating into the fog.
"We have an active trespasser recording classified family assets. Move, now!"
Two uniformed officers immediately bolted past the terrified guests, their heavy combat boots stomping across the delicate Persian rugs as they threw open the French doors and vanished into the storm. Arthur didn't watch them go; his entire focus remained fixed on the small, trembling boy still holding desperately to Clara’s apron. The billionaire’s composure completely shattered, revealing a desperate, broken man beneath the bespoke Italian wool.
"Julian, look at me," Arthur pleaded, ignoring the cold steel of the handcuffs Vance was now pulling from his belt.
"I don't care what that DNA paper says about chromosomes and bloodlines. I watched you take your very first breath in this house."
Victoria scoffed loudly, stepping over a discarded silver dome that still lay dented on the marble floor.
"Save your sentimental garbage for the jury, Arthur," she sneered, adjusting her diamond necklace with trembling fingers.
"You bought an infant off the black market to secure your grandfather's trust fund, and now the entire foundation is collapsing like a house of cards."
"That is a lie!" Clara screamed, her voice cutting through the whispering murmurs of the horrified guests with shocking ferocity.
The young maid stood up, stepping between the billionaire and the police, her black-and-white uniform soaked with the tears Julian had shed against her shoulder.
"Mr. Sterling didn't buy anyone! I was there the night the maternity ward burned! I watched them steal the real heir and swap him for a corpse!"
The entire ballroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence so profound that the roaring thunder outside sounded muffled and distant. Even Detective Vance paused mid-motion, his hand hovering over the handcuffs as his professional detachment cracked for a fraction of a second.
"Careful what you say next, young lady," Vance warned quietly, his eyes darting toward the open doors.
"Perjury in a federal kidnapping case carries a twenty-year sentence."

Before Clara could answer, a loud, metallic crash echoed from the garden, followed by the frantic shouting of the pursuing officers. A single, soaked object came flying through the broken glass of the French doors, skidding across the polished marble and stopping right at Julian’s shiny black shoes. It was a burnt silver locket, charred around the edges, bearing an engraving that made Arthur Sterling drop to his knees in sheer, absolute horror.
