Chapter 12 - The Northern Cliff

The secret panel slid open with a harsh, grinding screech, revealing a steep, winding stone staircase carved directly into the damp earth, leading upward into the howling darkness of the northern cliffs. Before Detective Vance could react, Edward lunged desperately toward the opening, dragging his soaking, shivering body out of the freezing basin and scrambling blindly up the stone steps like a cornered animal. Arthur, coughing and sputtering violently, broke the surface of the water a second later, grabbing the lowest rung of the metal ladder and dragging his ruined tuxedo up behind his twin.
"Stop right there! Federal custody!" Vance shouted, drawing his firearm and taking two splashing steps into the flooded room, but the treacherous footing and rising sludge made pursuit nearly impossible.
"Let them run, Detective," Elaine said quietly, her voice steady and calm as she watched the two identical men vanish into the dark stone tunnel.
"There is nowhere left for them to hide. Every offshore account was frozen when the foundation's master ledger synced with the federal registry."
Julian looked up at his mother, his pale face reflecting the harsh strobe light of the police cruisers outside. For the first time in his memory, the heavy, suffocating anxiety in his chest was gone, replaced by a quiet, steady warmth. He reached out with his free hand, touching the edge of the silver thermal blanket wrapped around her shoulders.
"Are we safe now, Mommy?" Julian asked softly, the word feeling entirely new and yet entirely natural on his tongue.
Elaine knelt down, pulling her son into an embrace so fierce and tight that it seemed as though she was trying to absorb every second of the seven years she had lost. Tears finally spilled over her eyelashes, but there was no pain in them—only profound, overwhelming relief.
"Yes, my sweet boy," she whispered against his messy light brown hair, her voice trembling with emotion.
"We are finally safe. The house of cards has fallen, and no one will ever lock us away again."
Clara stood nearby, watching the mother and son embrace, a quiet, bittersweet smile gracing her lips. She slowly reached down, brushing a speck of soot off the hem of her black-and-white maid's uniform, knowing her time in this cursed estate had finally come to an end.
"Clara," Elaine said softly, looking up from the embrace and holding out her hand to the young woman.
"You kept him alive when everyone else wanted him erased. You have a home with us, wherever we go from here."
Before Clara could answer, a loud, thunderous explosion echoed from high above the cliffs, shaking the subterranean foundation of the estate to its core. Dust and pulverized concrete rained down from the ceiling as a massive wall of fire engulfed the upper floors of the grand ballroom, turning the crystal chandeliers and sparkling silver gowns into a mountain of glowing, smoking ash.
Vance tapped his shoulder radio urgently, his face pale under the tactical lights.
"All units, the upper mansion has suffered a total structural collapse! Secure the perimeter and check the northern cliff path—the suspects may have triggered the legacy demolition charges!"

Elaine grabbed Julian’s hand tightly, looking toward the open exit tunnel that led out of the burning estate, unaware that Edward was waiting for them at the very edge of the cliff with a stolen detonator in his hand.
