Chapter 4 - The Charred Locket

The metallic ping of the charred silver locket sliding across the marble floor sounded like a gunshot in the dead silence of the grand ballroom. Julian instinctively stepped back, his small patent-leather shoe nudging the ruined piece of jewelry. The heat had melted the clasp, sealing the keepsake shut, but the family crest of the Sterlings—a rampant wolf flanked by crossed keys—was unmistakable beneath the layer of soot. Arthur dropped to his knees, ignoring the expensive fabric of his trousers pressing into the gritty glass shards, and grabbed the locket with shaking, bloodless fingers.

"This... this was in the nursery safe," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking into a ragged, breathless wheeze as he looked up at Detective Vance.

"It burned in the estate fire six years ago along with the original birth records. How did it just come flying out of the dark?"

Vance didn't answer immediately. He knelt beside the billionaire, using the tip of a gloved pen to lift the charred edge of the locket, revealing a microscopic serial number laser-etched into the hinge.

"It didn't burn, Sterling," Vance said grimly, his face hardening.

"Or at least, the safe it was locked inside was opened from the inside using a master override code that only the founding directors possess."

Victoria’s composure finally fractured, her manicured hand flying to her mouth as the sparkling silver of her dress trembled violently with her shaking body.

"Don't look at me," she hissed, backing away until her spine hit the mahogany paneling.

"Arthur controlled the East Wing security protocols after the first tragedy. If anyone had the biometric keys to the deep vault, it was him and his late wife!"

"My wife died giving birth to the boy who supposedly never existed!" Arthur roared, surging to his feet with a terrifying, primal fury that made even the armed officers reach for their holsters.

"You all stood by and watched her fade away in that private clinic while your medical boards signed off on every fabricated document!"

Clara knelt down quickly, wrapping her arms around Julian’s waist and pulling him tight against her chest to shield his ears from the escalating violence.

"Look at me, sweetie," she whispered urgently, her breath trembling against his light brown hair.

"Do not listen to the shouting. Remember what I taught you. When the wolves start tearing each other apart, that is our only chance to run toward the East Gate."

Julian nodded silently, his tear-streaked face pale, but his small eyes darting toward the shattered French doors where the storm raged outside.

Suddenly, the ballroom's massive crystal chandelier flickered violently once, twice, and then plunged the entire room into pitch-black darkness. A collective shriek of pure terror erupted from the trapped high-society guests as the emergency generators failed to kick in. In the absolute darkness, right beside Clara's ear, a cold, raspy voice whispered words that froze the blood in her veins:

"You missed a spot on the East Wing floor, Clara. The blood never really washes out of marble."
