Chapter 2 - The Red and Blue Sirens

The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom rattled under the sudden, rhythmic pounding of heavy fists, cutting through the suffocating tension like a razor. Arthur Sterling’s face drained of what little color remained, his dark eyes locking onto the tall, arched windows where the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers painted the marble floor in erratic, violent strokes. The elite guests, who moments ago stood frozen in synchronized judgment, now scrambled backward like scattering insects, their expensive silk and velvet hissing against the pristine surface. Clara didn’t flinch, her small frame remaining a solid, unyielding fortress around young Julian, who clutched the fabric of her maid's uniform until his knuckles turned ghostly white.

"Open this door in the name of the state!" boomed a voice from the hallway, deep and completely devoid of the polite deference that usually governed the Sterling estate.

Arthur took two rapid strides forward, throwing his weight against the mahogany panels and wrenching the door open before the authorities could break the lock. Detective Vance stood on the threshold, a weathered man in a charcoal trench coat whose sharp gaze immediately bypassed the billionaire host to fix on the weeping child hiding behind the maid. Behind Vance, two uniformed officers held a heavy aluminum briefcase that looked entirely out of place amid the baroque opulence of the chandelier-lit foyer.

"Arthur Sterling, I presume," Vance said, his voice flat and clinical.

"We have a court-mandated custody and asset seizure order signed by Judge Holloway. Step away from the minor."

Victoria stepped up beside Arthur, her sparkling silver gown catching the harsh blue light from outside, a triumphant smirk tugging at the corner of her lips.

"Thank God you're finally here, Detective," she purred, weaponizing her relief.

"This man has been harboring an illegal substitution, a fraudulent heir planted to deceive both the board and the public trust."

Arthur spun around, his fist clenched so tightly his fingernails broke the skin of his palm, a single drop of blood joining the tear still drying on his cheek.

"You absolute vulture, Victoria! You orchestrated this wiretap before the dessert course even cleared!"

Vance raised a gloved hand, silencing the erupting argument with a single, authoritative gesture that brook no dissent.

"Save the melodrama for the family court, Sterling," the detective commanded, motioning to the officers behind him.

"The genetic registry match came back twenty minutes ago, and it doesn't just exclude you, Arthur. It points straight to the missing records of the East Wing maternity ward fire seven years ago."

Clara gasped, her grip on Julian loosening for a terrifying split second.

The boy lifted his tear-stained face from her shoulder, his pale blue eyes wide with innocent terror as he looked past the police, straight toward the open French doors leading out into the dark, rain-swept gardens. There, standing half-concealed by the heavy velvet drapes, a figure in a soaking wet black raincoat was silently lifting a camera, photographing every single person in the room.
