Chapter 5: The Standoff on the Stairs

The muffled crack of a suppressed rifle deafened the narrow corridor, the bullet sparking off the stucco wall mere inches from Maya’s ear. Plaster dust rained down into her hair as she dropped into a tactical crouch and returned fire, sending two rapid rounds skipping across the concrete floor toward the advancing operative's boots.

The gunman ducked back behind the corner of the stairwell wall, cursing in a harsh, clipped accent.

"Maya! Status!" Williams shouted from the ground level, his voice nearly drowned out by the sound of sirens wailing in the distance, growing closer by the second.

"We've got active shooters on the northern stairwell! Pin them down!" Maya yelled back, keeping her weapon trained on the corner.

Beside her, Clara scrambled desperately toward the black duffel bag, her fingers clawing at the pulsing blue LED readout. The timer was down to 01:15.

"Don't touch it, Clara!" Jesse warned, his voice urgent as he pressed his back flat against the wall, trying to make himself as small a target as possible. "If you interrupt the handshake protocol, it triggers a wipe sequence. The data goes up in smoke, and they'll hunt us across three continents until we're cold in the ground."

"I don't care about your goddamn data!" Clara cried, her voice cracking as she wrestled with the heavy nylon zipper. "They killed David! They burned our house down! I just want this nightmare to end!"

Maya kept one eye on the stairwell corner while extending her free hand to stop Clara. "Listen to me, Clara. If that data vanishes, we lose our only leverage to keep you alive. The moment those men down there realize the ledger is gone, they'll execute every single one of us and call it a botched cartel drug rip."

A heavy thud echoed from the adjacent room as someone kicked the interior drywall, trying to break through the connecting door. Maya spun around, aiming her weapon at the cheap motel door as a heavy boot slammed through the wooden panel, splintering the frame and revealing the dark silhouette of a second tactical operative pressing through from Room 203.
