Chapter 4: The Ticking Timer

The sharp, pneumatic pop of a silenced rifle shot echoed through the damp night air, followed by the sound of Agent Williams diving hard behind a concrete pillar near the ice machine.

"Maya, we're pinned down!" Williams yelled over the comms channel, his breathing ragged. "They've got thermal optics, I can't move without taking fire!"

Up on the second-floor walkway, the blue LED numbers on the device inside the black duffel bag flickered coldly: 03:45... 03:44...

Maya kicked the duffel away from the doorway, sending it sliding across the slick concrete toward the metal railing. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her external demeanor remained ice-cold. She grabbed Jesse by the collar of his denim jacket, hauling him violently to his feet and shoving him hard against the exterior wall of Room 204.

"What is this?" Maya demanded, pressing the muzzle of her sidearm firmly beneath his jawline. "Talk, or you don't live to see the explosion."

Jesse swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the timer before flicking back to meet Maya’s intense gaze. The cockiness had drained from his face, replaced by a grim, sweaty resignation.

"It’s not a bomb, Agent. It’s a broadcast loop," Jesse whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "A dead man’s switch linked to every offshore server the syndicate uses to launder federal bailout funds. If that timer hits zero, a quarter-billion dollars routes directly back to accounts tied to your own agency's internal affairs division."

Clara raised her head from the floor, her face stained with tears and dirt. "He's lying! It's an encrypted ledger! My husband built it before they killed him in the warehouse district! They want it back because it proves the entire department is dirty!"

From the stairwell on the right, heavy tactical boots struck the concrete steps with alarming speed. The first operative rounded the corner, his rifle leveled directly at Maya’s chest.

Without hesitation, Maya released Jesse, spun on her heel, and drew a bead on the approaching gunman, her finger tightening on the trigger just as a blinding flash erupted from the muzzle of the enemy's rifle.
