Chapter 2: The Weight of the Duffel

The impact of Maya’s tackle knocked the wind out of Jesse with a harsh, rattling wheeze. The metal railing groaned under their combined weight, vibrating violently against the concrete foundation of the second-floor walkway.
"Williams, second floor. Bring the car around," Maya spoke directly into her shoulder-mounted comms unit, her voice crisp and urgent.
She drove her knee firmly into the small of Jesse’s back, pinning him flat against the gritty pavement. Her hands twisted his arms upward, locking his wrists into a painful submission hold. Jesse grunted, his fingers clawing uselessly at the rough concrete, but he didn't scream or thrash. There was a sickening calmness to his resistance that immediately set off alarm bells in Maya's mind.
Clara stood frozen a few feet away, her chest heaving as she dropped the heavy black duffel bag. The bag hit the floor with a dull, metallic thud that echoed sharply in the narrow motel corridor. A rusted zipper on the side pocket snagged open slightly, revealing the corner of a banded stack of hundred-dollar bills resting against a cold steel component.
"Don't look inside it," Jesse rasped, his face pressed against the dirt. "You have no idea whose money you're carrying. It’s a death sentence."
"Shut your mouth," Maya snapped, tightening her grip until Jesse hissed in pain.
From the parking lot below, the heavy rumble of an unmarked federal sedan echoed against the asphalt. Headlights swept across the motel facade, cutting through the gloom. A stocky man in a gray trench coat stepped out from the driver's side, looking up at them with a grim expression. It was Agent Williams, and he wasn't alone. Another set of heavy car doors slammed shut in the distance, followed by the unmistakable sound of running boots hitting the gravel.
Clara stared down at the duffel bag, her eyes wide with mounting terror as she realized running was no longer an option.

"Agent Williams," Maya called down, keeping her knee planted firmly in Jesse's spine. "Secure the perimeter. We've got company on the east access road."
Williams paused, his hand hovering over his holster as headlights from a second, unmarked vehicle swung abruptly into the motel entrance, cutting off their only escape route.
