Chapter 11: Echoes in the Dust

The beam of Maya’s flashlight swept across the decaying concrete floor of the grain elevator, illuminating old grain chutes, peeling lead paint, and thick layers of undisturbed dust. But right in the center of the open floor sat three brand-new MRE ration packs, an open first-aid kit with surgical supplies, and a glowing laptop connected to a satellite uplink dish pointed straight out a shattered window.
Someone had been here very recently. And they had been expecting them.
"Hold up," Maya hissed, extending a restraining arm to halt Clara and the wounded Jesse. She raised her sidearm, scanning the shadowy upper catwalks that crisscrossed the cavernous darkness overhead.
Jesse groaned, leaning heavily against a rusted support pillar. "It's... fine..." he gasped, spitting a drop of blood onto the concrete. "Drop... your... weapon, Maya. There's no one... in the rafters."
"How could you possibly know that, Jesse?" Maya demanded, her voice echoing sharply off the high concrete walls. "You've been bleeding out in the back of my car for twenty miles."
"Because... I set this place up six months ago," Jesse whispered, sliding slowly down the pillar until he sat in the dust, clutching his bandaged shoulder. "It was... our insurance policy... in case the syndicate... decided to clean house early."
Clara knelt beside him, ripping open a sterile gauze package from the first-aid kit with trembling hands. "You knew they were going to kill David? You knew what they were planning all along?"
"I knew... the moment they started laundering cartel money through the housing trust," Jesse replied weakly, his eyelids fluttering. "I tried to stop it from the inside... but they framed me for embezzlement... put a bounty on my head... and used Clara as bait to draw me out."
Agent Williams suddenly rushed back through the rusted side door, breathing heavily as he slammed it shut and threw a heavy iron deadbolt into place.
"Maya, we've got movement on the access road," Williams reported, his voice tight with panic. "Two unmarked vans without plates just bypassed the highway barricade. They're deploying thermal drones."

Before Maya could respond, the laptop sitting on the wooden crate in the center of the room chimed loudly, its screen flashing to life with a live video feed from an exterior camera mounted high on the grain elevator's roof.
On the grainy black-and-white monitor, three armed figures in tactical gear could be seen stepping out of the vans down below, carrying heavy breaching charges directly toward the exterior steel door.
