Chapter 1: The Wrong Room

The neon sign of the Thunderbird Motel flickered a sickly amber, casting long, bruised shadows across the damp concrete walkway. Cold autumn wind whipped off the interstate, rattling the loose corrugated metal siding of the building.
Outside Room 204, Jesse stood with his hand braced hard against the weathered doorframe. He wore his worn blue denim jacket with its fleece collar turned up against the chill, a dark baseball cap pulled low to obscure his eyes. His breathing was slow, measured, completely devoid of panic.
Opposite him, Clara stood clutching a heavy black duffel bag against her chest. Her knuckles were stark white, her plaid flannel shirt trembling slightly in the draft.
"Wrong room, sweetheart. Come with me," Jesse said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that cut cleanly through the hum of the highway traffic.
"Take the bag! Just leave me alone!" Clara yelled, her voice cracking with a raw, desperate edge as she tried to sidestep him.
A few feet away, leaning against the rust-stained metal railing, Maya watched the exchange with cold detachment. She popped the tab of her blue soda can, taking a slow sip before crushing the aluminum slightly in her palm. Maya wore a dark tactical jacket over a white top, her sidearm resting securely in its holster on her belt, her long dark hair whipping across her face.
As Clara shoved past Jesse toward the stairs, Maya stepped smoothly into her path, blocking her exit.
"Let her go. You're one move from a federal charge," Maya stated, her tone flat, lethal, and entirely devoid of hesitation.

Jesse didn't flinch. Instead, a slow, ugly smirk spread across his bearded face as he turned his back on them both, beginning a slow saunter down the walkway toward the stairs.
In a fraction of a second, Maya dropped her can, lunged forward with explosive athletic precision, and tackled Jesse hard against the concrete railing, sending a shower of orange sparks flying into the dark abyss below.
