Chapter 3: Shadows in the Parking Lot

The glare of high-beam headlights washed over the second-floor walkway, turning the falling mist into a shimmering curtain of silver. Agent Williams drew his weapon, crouching low behind the hood of his sedan as a black SUV slid violently to a halt blocking the motel exit.

"Maya! We're compromised!" Williams shouted up the stairs, his voice straining over the screaming engine of the newly arrived vehicle.

Up on the concrete walkway, Maya kept her weight pressed into Jesse’s back, her eyes darting toward the parking lot. The doors of the black SUV flew open simultaneously. Two men in dark tactical gear stepped out, their faces obscured by ski masks, each holding suppressed carbines raised at a low ready. They didn't shout warnings. They didn't demand explanations. They moved with terrifying, institutional efficiency, sweeping their rifle barrels upward toward Room 204.

"Get down, Clara!" Maya roared, releasing Jesse for a split second to shove Clara flat against the stucco wall beside the doorway.

Jesse didn't try to run. Instead, he rolled over onto his side, coughing violently, a dark smirk playing across his bruised lips. "You think they're here for me, Agent? Look closer at the duffel."

Maya glanced down at the black bag. The zipper had parted further, revealing not just money, but a glowing blue LED readout strapped to the interior lining. It was a digital timer, currently ticking backward with silent, relentless speed.

Below them, Agent Williams fired two warning shots into the asphalt to halt the advancing men, but the tactical operatives simply split up, one moving toward the metal staircase on the left, the other heading for the stairwell on the right. They were executing a classic pincer movement designed to trap everyone on the walkway in a fatal crossfire.

Maya’s hand hovered over her sidearm. She looked from the ticking timer in the duffel bag to Jesse’s mocking expression, and finally down at Clara, who was curled into a tight ball on the floor, weeping silently.

"Williams! Fall back to the treeline!" Maya screamed into her comms.

Before Williams could move, the front window of the motel office below them shattered into a thousand glittering shards as a silenced round punched clean through the glass.
