Chapter 10: The Railyard Sanctuary

The unmarked federal sedan sped down the darkened two-lane highway with its headlights dark, navigating purely by the pale, ghostly illumination of a rising half-moon. Inside, the heavy silence was punctuated only by Jesse’s shallow, ragged breathing from the backseat.
Clara sat beside him, holding a makeshift pressure compress against his wounded shoulder while tears silently traced clean lines down her soot-stained cheeks.
Up front, Maya gripped the steering wheel with white knuckles, her eyes constantly darting to the rearview mirror to check for tailing vehicles. In the passenger seat, Agent Williams worked furiously on a burner phone, trying to bypass the agency's firewall to ping any secure satellite relays.
"Nothing," Williams muttered, tossing the burner onto the dashboard in frustration. "Every secure relay in the tri-state area is routing directly to an empty IP address in Langley. We're completely invisible, but so is everyone hunting us."
"That works both ways," Maya said coldly, swinging the sedan off the paved highway and onto a rutted, gravel access road choked with towering weeds and rusted industrial machinery.
The car bounced violently over the uneven terrain before sliding to a halt in the deep, ink-black shadow of a massive, derelict grain elevator that loomed like a concrete monolith against the night sky. The rusted skeleton of an old railway spur snaked away from the structure into the darkness.
Maya cut the engine and killed the headlights, plunging the car into absolute stillness.
"Williams, sweep the perimeter. Make sure we weren't followed from the highway," Maya ordered, unholstering her sidearm as she swung her door open.
"On it," Williams whispered, slipping out into the damp night air.

Clara helped ease Jesse out of the backseat, dragging his dead weight as he groaned in pain, his boots scraping against the gravel. They half-carried him toward a rusted corrugated steel side door that hung slightly ajar on broken hinges.
As they stepped inside the cavernous, echoing interior of the abandoned elevator, Maya swept her flashlight beam across the dusty concrete floor, revealing a scene that made her blood run instantly cold.
