Chapter 12: The Breaching Charges

The rhythmic, mechanical whir of drone rotors buzzed faintly overhead like an angry hornet's nest, vibrating through the corrugated metal roof of the abandoned grain elevator.

"They've got us bracketed," Williams muttered, unholstering his weapon and taking cover behind a thick concrete pillar opposite the door. "If those breaching charges go off, this whole rusted tin can is going to collapse on top of us."

Maya stared at the laptop monitor, watching the tactical operatives methodically apply magnetic shaped charges to the exterior frame of the rusted side door. She didn't panic; her mind raced through tactical permutations with ruthless clarity.

"Clara, get over here. Help me secure this uplink," Maya ordered, tapping the keyboard of the open laptop.

"What are you doing?" Clara asked, abandoning Jesse's side for a crucial second to rush to the desk.

"If the ledger data is still routing through federal servers, we can bounce a localized distress signal directly to the independent oversight committee in Geneva," Maya explained rapidly, her fingers flying across the keys. "It's a digital dead man's switch of our own. If these guys breach and kill us, all encrypted files automatically dump to international press outlets."

"Do it," Jesse rasped from the floor, coughing weakly as he tried to sit up. "Upload... the... encryption... keys... now..."

The laptop screen flickered violently as a red progress bar appeared: UPLOADING: 42%... 45%...

Down below, a dull, concussive thud reverberated through the ground, followed by the blinding white flash of a shaped charge detonating against the exterior steel door. The heavy iron deadbolt sheared instantly in half, and the rusted door caved inward in a storm of jagged metal and flying sparks.

Through the billowing smoke, two armed operatives stepped over the wreckage, their rifle barrels sweeping the dark interior of the grain elevator.

"Target sighted!" one of them barked into his comms unit. "Securing the asset and eliminating all non-coms!"

Maya raised her sidearm, took a steadying breath, and squeezed the trigger just as the progress bar on the laptop hit 88%.
