Chapter 9 - Darkness in Unit 409

The sudden plunge into total darkness was accompanied by an unnatural, suffocating silence. Julian froze mid-stride, his hands outstretched in the pitch black as he tried to locate Marcus in the void. The hum of the secure server rack in the corner provided the only audible sound, a low, mechanical drone that suddenly sounded like a ticking time bomb.

"Marcus?" Julian called out, his voice sharp and laced with adrenaline. He took a cautious step forward, his polished black dress shoe scraping against the concrete. "Where did you go?"

"Stay where you are, Julian," Elena's voice cut through the dark, remarkably steady and devoid of panic. "Don't move an inch."

"He's going for the door," Clara sobbed from somewhere near the floor, her voice muffled by her hands. "He's going to lock us in here and send the files to the Feds."

Julian reached out blindly, his hand connecting with the cold metal surface of the desk. He swept his arm across the top, searching for the flashlight or the emergency switch Elena had flipped earlier. His fingers brushed against the manila envelope, then the immunity document, but the flash drive Marcus had been holding was gone.

"I have the manual override for the security door right here," Elena said calmly. A soft, blue glow illuminated her face from below as she clicked on the flashlight function of her smartphone. The pale light cast long, dramatic shadows across the small storage unit, revealing an empty space where Marcus had been standing just seconds before.

The steel roll-up door at the entrance was halfway down, locked firmly into place with a heavy mechanical click.

Julian cursed loudly, rushing over to the door and grabbing the bottom rail. He yanked upward with all his weight, but the metal barrier didn't budge an inch. It had been chained and padlocked from the outside.

"He locked us in," Julian said, his breathing growing heavier as the realization set in. He turned back to look at Elena, whose phone light was the only illumination in the room. "The power outage wasn't an accident. He tripped the circuit breaker from the hallway panel."

Elena walked over to the desk, her movements slow and deliberate despite the dire situation. She placed her phone down so it illuminated the corkboard and the server rack. "No, Julian. Marcus didn't just lock us in. He transferred the primary server database to an external receiver."

Clara slowly pushed herself up from the floor, wiping her tear-stained face with the sleeve of her pink blazer. She stared at the server rack in horror. "Can we stop the transfer?"

"It's already completed," Elena replied, pointing to a small green indicator light on the main tower that had just turned solid red. "Every file, every financial record, and every recorded conversation we've had over the last six months has just been uploaded to an unsecured cloud drop. Within five minutes, it will be mirrored across every major investigative news network in the city."

Julian stared at the red light, the reality of their situation crashing down around him. All the money, the careful planning, the expensive suits, and the golden hotel lobbies couldn't save them now. The conspiracy was out in the open.

Just as the silence threatened to crush them entirely, the heavy steel door outside rattled violently, accompanied by the distinct sound of police sirens wailing in the distance, growing louder with every passing second.
