Chapter 11 - The Subterranean Escape

The first crash of the battering ram against the steel roll-up door shook dust and loose concrete from the low ceiling of Unit 409. Julian didn't hesitate; he shoved Clara headfirst into the dark drainage opening just as the metal door buckled inward with a second, thunderous blow.
"Go! Keep moving down!" Julian shouted over the echoing commotion in the corridor outside.
He scrambled into the narrow concrete shaft after Clara, pulling the heavy hatch shut behind him just as the front door of the storage unit was ripped entirely off its tracks. Through the small ventilation grate of the hatch, Julian caught a brief glimpse of heavily armed tactical officers flooding into the room, their flashlights sweeping wildly across the empty server racks and the abandoned corkboard.
"Clear! The room is clear, but the back hatch is open!" a muffled voice shouted from inside the unit.
Julian pressed himself flat against the damp concrete floor of the drainage tunnel, holding his breath. Clara was already crawling rapidly ahead, her light pink blazer snagging on a jagged bolt in the low ceiling, but she didn't stop. Elena moved just behind Julian, her movements calculated and completely silent, her long cream-colored coat dragging through the shallow layer of stagnant water at the bottom of the tunnel.
They crawled for what felt like hours through the cramped, subterranean labyrinth. The air grew progressively cooler, smelling heavily of damp earth, rust, and distant diesel exhaust from the subway lines above. The distant rumble of a passing train vibrated through the concrete beneath their hands and knees, shaking the dust loose from the overhead pipes.
Finally, the tunnel opened up into a wider maintenance chamber lit by a single flickering overhead bulb. Clara collapsed against the damp wall, gasping for air, her white top stained with mud and her hair tangled around her face. She looked down at her hands, which were scraped and covered in soot.
"I can't go any further," Clara wept softly, burying her face in her knees. "We're ruined, Julian. Even if we make it out of these tunnels, every police department in the country has our faces by now."
Julian stood up slowly, brushing the dirt from the knees of his beige trousers. The three-piece suit was completely ruined, the fabric stained and torn, and his black dress shoes were caked in mud. He adjusted his black tie out of pure habit, his eyes fixed on the concrete stairs leading upward to a heavy metal street-level grating fifty feet away.
"Clara is right about one thing," Julian said, his voice hard and level as he looked down at her. "There's no running from the federal warrants anymore. Marcus made sure of that the second he uploaded the database."
Elena stepped past them, walking steadily toward the base of the metal staircase. She looked up through the street-level grating, where the faint glow of city streetlights filtered down through the iron bars. A light rain had begun to fall outside, pattering softly against the pavement above.
"Who said anything about running?" Elena asked, turning her head slowly to look back at them. A faint, enigmatic smile played at the corners of her lips. "We aren't going to hide, Julian. We are going to finish this on our own terms."
Julian frowned, taking a step toward her. "What are you planning, Elena? You can't outmaneuver a federal indictment."
"I don't need to outmaneuver it," Elena replied calmly, reaching into the pocket of her coat and pulling out a small, encrypted satellite burner phone that hadn't touched the compromised network. "I just need to make sure Marcus isn't the only one holding the cards when we walk into the district attorney's office."

Before Julian could ask what she meant, the burner phone in her hand began to vibrate violently, flashing a single incoming call from an unknown, restricted number.
