Chapter 1 - The Shattered Alibi

Julian stood in the center of the golden luxury hotel lobby, his fingers tightening instinctively around the fine silver chain of his pocket watch. The air around him felt heavy, smelling faintly of expensive jasmine and polished brass. He turned his head sharply toward Clara, his eyes narrowing with a dangerous intensity. The beige three-piece suit he wore felt suddenly restrictive, trapping the rising heat of his anger. Clara stood inches away, her light pink blazer contrasting sharply with the coldness of her expression, her gold hoop earrings catching the glittering light of the overhead chandeliers.

"This is ridiculous," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as he glared down at her. "The Mercer hotel happened months ago."

Clara blinked, her confusion momentarily overriding her composure. She reached out and lightly touched his arm through the fabric of his jacket, her fingers trembling slightly against the wool.

"How do you know it was the Mercer hotel?" Clara asked, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper that barely carried over the soft hum of the lobby.

Julian pulled his arm back abruptly, refusing to let her touch calm him. "That is not the point, Clara. You are bringing up ghosts from a dead past."

"I heard it somewhere," Clara insisted, her gaze locking onto his with a sudden, unsettling firmness.

"From who?" Julian snapped, his voice sharp enough to echo against the glass railings behind them.

Clara hesitated, her eyes darting away toward the display shelves filled with decorative teddy bears before snapping back to meet his gaze. A flicker of genuine panic crossed her features. "I don't remember. You weren't supposed to know."

Elena watched them both in absolute silence. She stood just a few feet away, her hands resting protectively over her rounded stomach. The cream-colored long coat she wore was unbuttoned, revealing the dark brown fitted dress underneath. Her expression remained mask-like, but her eyes held a storm of calculated realization. She had known about the Mercer hotel all along.

Julian took a half-step toward Clara, lowering his voice until it was barely a hiss. "If anyone else knows about that night, we are all finished."

"You think I want this to come out?" Clara whispered back, her chest rising and falling rapidly under her white top. "I have more to lose than either of you."

Elena finally stepped forward, the heels of her boots clicking softly against the marble floor. The sound stopped them both dead in their tracks.

"You are both wasting time arguing about who knows what," Elena said calmly, her voice steady and chillingly composed. "The real question is not who told Clara about the Mercer hotel."

Julian turned to her, his jaw tight. "Then what is it, Elena?"

May you like

Elena smiled faintly, a cold gesture that didn't reach her eyes, and pulled a small, unmarked manila envelope from her beige handbag. "Someone left this at my front door this morning. It contains the exact passenger manifest from the Mercer elevators on the night of the fire."
