Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

The heavy silence inside the storage unit became absolute. Julian’s hand instinctively dropped toward his pocket, his fingers brushing the cold metal of his pocket watch chain as he strained his ears to catch any further sound from the corridor. Clara grabbed Elena’s arm, her fingernails digging through the fabric of the cream-colored coat with enough force to cause pain. Elena didn't flinch; she merely turned her head slowly toward the open steel doorway, her dark eyes narrowing as she listened to the faint scrape of rubber-soled shoes against the concrete floor outside.

"Someone is out there," Clara whispered, her voice trembling so violently she could barely form the words. "They followed us. How did they find us so fast?"

"They didn't follow us," Elena said, her voice remaining unnervingly calm. She gently pulled her arm away from Clara's grip and stepped toward the desk. "Julian's phone. It had an active GPS ping running in the background when he pulled up the security feed."

Julian’s face went pale. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, his thumb tapping the screen in a panic. The device was completely dead, the screen flashing a single low-battery warning before blacking out entirely. "It was tracking us the moment I opened the notification," he cursed under his breath, stepping back into the shadows of the server rack.

"Quiet," Elena warned, holding up a single hand.

Footsteps were approaching now, slow and deliberate, echoing off the low concrete ceiling. They stopped directly outside Unit 409. The shadow of a tall figure fell across the threshold, cutting through the harsh fluorescent light of the storage unit. None of them dared to breathe.

A gloved hand reached around the doorframe, tapping twice against the metal wall in a slow, mocking rhythm. Then, a low, distorted voice drifted into the room.

"You left your back door wide open, Julian," the voice said, dripping with artificial amusement. "And honestly, a storage unit? I expected a bit more imagination from the man who orchestrated the Mercer cover-up."

Julian stepped out from behind the server rack, his jaw set in hard lines. Despite the terror gripping the room, his posture remained rigid and defiant. He smoothed the front of his beige three-piece suit with a practiced, automatic gesture. "Show yourself. We know you're already holding the digital files. What else could you possibly want from us?"

The figure stepped fully into the light of the doorway, but the harsh overhead glare cast their face entirely in shadow beneath the deep hood of a dark jacket. However, the silver wristwatch catching the light on their wrist was unmistakable.

Clara gasped, stumbling backward until she hit the edge of the metal desk. Her eyes bulged with a mixture of recognition and pure horror as she stared at the intruder.

May you like

"No," Clara choked out, shaking her head frantically. "That's impossible. You were supposed to be dead."
