Chapter 7 - The Ultimatum

The fluorescent lights overhead flickered once, casting a momentary wave of darkness across the small storage unit before stabilizing with a low, irritating hum. Julian stared at the small flash drive dangling between Marcus's fingers, his mind racing through a dozen different escape routes, discarding every single one of them. The concrete walls were too thick, the corridor outside too narrow, and Marcus was blocking the only exit.

"You think a public confession will save you, Marcus?" Julian said, his voice regaining a cold, corporate authority as he straightened his black tie. "The moment you implicate us, your own name is dragged back into the federal investigation. You were the chief financial officer of the Mercer expansion project. You approved the fraudulent budget adjustments. You go down right beside us."

Marcus's smile faded, replaced by a hard, unyielding glare. "I am already dead, Julian. Legally, my identity was erased the night of the fire. I have nothing left to lose. But you? You have your pristine reputation, your corporate board seats, and your precious freedom." He turned his gaze toward Elena, who stood silently beside the server rack. "And Elena, of course, has a child on the way. I imagine she would prefer not to spend the next twenty years raising her baby behind bulletproof glass in a federal penitentiary."

Elena finally moved, stepping forward into the harsh light. Her expression remained chillingly composed, lacking any trace of the panic that had consumed Clara. "You underestimate me, Marcus. You always did. You think fear is the only leverage that works on people like us."

"Is it not?" Marcus challenged, tilting his head. "Look at Clara. She is one breath away from a complete psychological collapse."

Clara flinched at the mention of her name, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist as she stared at the floor. "Just give him what he wants, Julian," she whispered, her voice cracking with despair. "We can't win this. He has everything."

"Quiet, Clara," Julian snapped, never taking his eyes off Marcus. He took another step forward, closing the distance between them until they were only a few feet apart. "Let's say we agree to your terms, Marcus. How do we know you won't release the files anyway the moment the confession is recorded?"

Marcus reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document, tossing it carelessly onto the metal desk in front of Elena. "That is a legally binding immunity agreement, drafted by a lawyer who doesn't even know my real name. If you sign it and record the video within the next twelve hours, I wipe my secure servers and disappear across the border. You keep your freedom; I get my absolute vindication."

Julian looked down at the document on the desk, then up at Marcus's cold blue eyes. "And if we need time to review it?"

Marcus checked his silver wristwatch, the second hand ticking loudly in the quiet room. "You have exactly ten minutes to decide before I send the first encrypted archive to the Department of Justice."
