Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Shadows

The hooded figure lowered their head slightly, letting a slow, calculated chuckle escape into the damp air of the storage unit. The silver wristwatch glinted again under the fluorescent bulbs, casting sharp reflections across the metal desk. Julian stepped forward, placing himself protectively between Clara and the intruder, his fingers tightly clenched into fists inside the pockets of his beige trousers.

"Who are you?" Julian demanded, his voice echoing off the concrete walls with a sharp edge. "Take off the hood. Stop hiding behind parlor tricks."

With a slow, theatrical movement, the intruder reached up and pulled back the dark hood. The harsh light revealed a sharp-featured face with pale skin and piercing blue eyes that looked entirely devoid of fear or remorse. It was a face Julian and Clara had not seen in over six months—a face they had buried deep in the police reports following the Mercer hotel disaster.

"Marcus?" Clara whispered, her knees buckling slightly before she caught herself against the edge of the metal server rack. "We attended your funeral. Your casket was sealed."

Marcus smiled, a cold, humorless stretching of his lips. "An open-and-shut case of mistaken identity, Clara. When a multi-million-dollar hotel burns to the ground with a body inside, the authorities are always eager to pin a name on the charred remains so they can close the file. It is amazing what a well-placed dental record and a bribed coroner can accomplish."

Elena stepped out from the shadows of the desk, her expression completely unchanged. She didn't look surprised; instead, she looked like a chess player watching an opponent make a predictable move. "So, the ghost of the Mercer financial audit finally decides to show his face. You didn't come here just to reminisce, Marcus. What is your price?"

Marcus shifted his gaze from Julian to Elena, his eyes lingering for a moment on her rounded stomach before rising back to her face. "Price? Oh, Elena, you misunderstand my intentions entirely. This isn't about money anymore. Julian and his corporate friends stole ten years of my life and tried to turn me into a scapegoat for their arson. Money can't buy back what I lost."

"Then what do you want?" Julian asked, his voice strained as he stepped closer to Marcus, ignoring the warning glare from Elena. "If you want us dead, you wouldn't have spent weeks playing cat-and-mouse with these files. You want something specific."

Marcus nodded slowly, stepping another inch into the unit. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, sleek flash drive, holding it up between two fingers so it caught the light. "I want a public confession. Recorded, signed, and broadcasted to every major news outlet in the country. You three are going to stand up in front of the world and explain exactly how you orchestrated the Mercer fire to bury the embezzlement scandal."

Clara let out a hysterical laugh, her hands flying to her face. "You're insane! If we do that, we spend the rest of our lives in a maximum-security prison."

"Or," Marcus said smoothly, his eyes flashing with a dangerous light, "you can refuse. And within the hour, I release the unedited audio files of your planning meetings to every federal prosecutor on the East Coast."
