Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Study

The silence that followed Julian's announcement was heavier than the crystal chandeliers overhead. Clara let out a sharp intake of breath, her fingers clutching her pearl necklace so tightly the string threatened to snap. Elena didn't flinch, though her hand tightened instinctively around the strap of her beige handbag. The golden reflections of the hotel lobby suddenly felt suffocating, closing in on them from all sides.

"Who is it?" Clara whispered, her eyes darting toward the glass entrance doors as if expecting an assassin to walk through them at any second. "Julian, tell me you see a face on the camera."

"I can't see their face," Julian muttered, his thumb frantically swiping across the screen of his phone as he tried to refresh the live stream. The three-piece suit he wore felt soaked through with sudden cold sweat. "They are wearing a dark hoodie. They know where the blind spots are in the hallway, but they walked right up to the mahogany desk."

"Your safe," Elena said flatly, her dark eyes narrowing as she connected the pieces. "They are going for the physical hard drives from the Mercer investigation."

Julian cursed under his breath, turning sharply on his heel. "We need to leave right now. We have to get back to my place before they crack the biometric lock."

"And go right into a trap?" Clara grabbed the sleeve of his beige jacket, her voice trembling. "Julian, listen to yourself! If someone broke into your house that easily, they are waiting for you to walk through the front door. We need to call the police."

"And tell them what?" Julian shouted, forgetting his restraint for a split second before lowering his voice into a dangerous growl. "Tell them we have illegal surveillance files from a building that burned down six months ago? That is a ticket straight to a federal penitentiary for all three of us."

Elena watched them bicker with a chilling, detached focus. She slowly reached into her handbag again, her fingers brushing against the cold paper of the manila envelope. "Clara is right about one thing, Julian. Driving back blindly is suicide. But staying here in this open hotel lobby while someone dismantles your life remotely isn't much better."

"Then what do you suggest, Elena?" Julian snapped, his patience wearing thin as he glared at her. "You've been acting like you have all the answers since we met downstairs."

"I don't have all the answers," Elena said smoothly, stepping closer to them so her voice wouldn't carry. "I have a contingency plan. Six months ago, right after the Mercer fire, I knew things would unravel. I rented a secure, off-grid storage unit three blocks away. That is where we are going."

Clara stared at her in utter disbelief. "You rented a storage unit? Why would you do that?"

"Because I knew people like Julian would try to bury the truth, and people like Clara would eventually panic and break," Elena replied, her gaze unblinking. "And now, that unit is our only safe harbor."

Julian hesitated, his eyes flicking back to his phone screen. The live video feed had suddenly cut to a completely black screen. A single red text notification blinked in the center of the display: Files downloaded successfully.
