Chapter 6 - The Ghost of the Past

The venomous words hung in the air like poison smoke, stopping Maya dead in her tracks. The agents hurried Eleanor out through the grand double doors, her furious protests fading down the long marble corridor, but her final warning echoed relentlessly in Maya’s mind. She turned slowly to look at her father, watching as the triumphant light in his eyes flickered and died, replaced instantly by a dark, guarded shadow.
“Dad... what was she talking about?” Maya asked, her voice barely above a whisper as she clutched the heavy black jacket tighter around her shoulders. “What did she mean about Mom?”
Marcus looked away, staring down at the broken glass still scattered across the floor near his polished leather shoes. The confident, unshakable titan of industry suddenly looked profoundly tired, the immense weight of his hidden past visibly crushing his broad shoulders. He took a slow, deep breath, running a large hand over his trimmed gray beard before finally meeting his daughter’s searching gaze.
“Eleanor was just thrashing about, trying to hurt us on her way down,” Marcus said, his voice unusually strained and lacking its customary absolute certainty. “Don’t listen to the desperate lies of a cornered criminal, Maya.”
“She didn’t sound like she was lying, Dad,” Maya pressed, stepping closer, her eyes flashing with a determination that mirrored his own. “She sounded like she knew a secret. A secret you’ve been keeping from me my entire life. Every time I ask about the night my mother died in that fire, you change the subject or shut me down.”
Marcus closed his eyes for a brief second, visibly fighting an internal war. When he opened them, his expression had hardened into an impenetrable wall once again. He gestured toward the private elevator at the far end of the ballroom, ignoring her direct question entirely.
“The car is waiting downstairs, Maya. We are going home,” Marcus said firmly, turning on his heel and walking away without waiting for her response.

Maya stood frozen on the ruined floor, her heart pounding against her ribs. Her father’s evasion was all the confirmation she needed. The night’s dramatic takedown of the corporate thieves had suddenly dissolved into background noise, overshadowed by the terrifying possibility that the man who had just defended her honor might be hiding a much darker truth about the tragedy that shaped her entire existence.
