Chapter 13 - Federal Intervention

“FBI! Nobody move!” the lead tactical commander shouted, sweeping his assault rifle across the dark archive room before lowering the barrel slightly as he recognized Marcus Vance standing calmly by the desk.
Julian scrambled toward the open doorway, desperately raising his hands in a pathetic display of innocence. “Agent, thank God! Arrest him! Marcus Vance has embezzled billions from the charity foundation and held me hostage in this room!”
The FBI Director ignored Julian completely, walking past the cowering older man with a cold, disgusted glare. He stopped directly in front of Marcus, pulling a thick folder from under his arm and opening it to a signed federal warrant.
“Marcus Vance, Director of the Vance Charitable Trust,” the Director said formally. “We have intercepted the unauthorized digital transfer initiated from this sub-basement. Furthermore, our cyber-crime unit has successfully decrypted the hard drives recovered from Arthur Pendelton upstairs.”
Julian’s jaw dropped slack as he realized the tactical nightmare he had walked into. “No... the firewall was secure! I routed it through seven international proxies!”
“Your proxies were traceable the moment you logged into our honey-pot server three weeks ago,” the Director replied smoothly, not even glancing down at Julian. He turned his attention back to Marcus. “The federal prosecutor has already signed off on the expanded indictments. You and your associates are officially charged with racketeering, securities fraud, and the twenty-year-old arson-homicide of Elena Vance.”
The name echoed through the underground archive like a final judgment. Julian collapsed entirely against the concrete wall, his cane clattering away across the floor as reality finally crushed his spirit. He had spent decades hiding behind clever corporate structures and hired proxies, believing himself untouchable, only to be dismantled by a patient father executing a multi-decade promise to his fallen wife.
Marcus nodded slowly, the immense burden he had carried for half a lifetime finally lifting from his shoulders. He reached out, gently placing his hand on Maya’s shoulder once more, feeling the steady, strong heartbeat of his daughter—the living legacy of the woman they had both lost so many years ago.
“It’s over, Julian,” Marcus said, his voice quiet, steady, and utterly final.
Two tactical agents stepped forward, grabbing Julian by the shoulders and hauling him up from the floor, slapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists. As they dragged him toward the exit, Julian thrashed weakly, his eyes wild with desperate fury as he stared directly at Maya.

“Your father is a monster, girl!” Julian screamed, spitting blood onto the clean concrete floor as the agents pulled him toward the corridor. “He knew about the fire before it happened! He let her burn so he could keep the patents!”
