Chapter 4 - The Stolen Cure

The pages trembled in Maya’s hands as the horrific reality of the documents settled into her mind. This was not merely a white-collar dispute over corporate dominance or stock manipulation. Arthur Pendelton and Eleanor Vance had systematically looted millions of dollars from a designated pediatric medical fund, redirecting life-saving resources into private offshore accounts to finance their extravagant lifestyles. Maya looked up from the papers, her grief over a shattered tray instantly vanishing, replaced by a cold, righteous fury.

“You stole from dying children,” Maya said, her voice ringing out clearly across the silent, stunned ballroom. She stood up, holding the incriminating report high for all the remaining guests to see. “You drained the accounts of the Children’s Hope Initiative to buy these dresses, these jewels, and these multi-million-dollar estates.”

Eleanor flinched as several prominent philanthropists turned their horrified gazes toward her. The socialite’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. “Shut your insolent mouth, you little nobody! You don’t know anything about how this foundation operates!”

“I know enough,” Marcus interrupted, stepping forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with his daughter. He gestured to the guards holding Arthur down on the floor. “And so does the federal prosecutor currently waiting in my private office downstairs. The wire transfers were flagged three weeks ago, Eleanor. We simply waited for you to sign the final distribution authorization tonight, locking in your legal culpability beyond any shadow of a doubt.”

Arthur groaned from the floor, pinned beneath a guard’s heavy knee, his expensive silk tie ruined by spilled champagne. “You set us up from the very beginning, Vance. You manufactured this entire gala just to trap us.”

“I gave you every opportunity to do the right thing,” Marcus replied coldly, his eyes narrowing as he looked down at the disgraced executive. “Instead, you chose greed. You chose cruelty. And you chose to mock the very people who trusted you.”

The ballroom doors swung open wide with a sharp, echoing bang, breaking the intense atmosphere. Two federal agents in dark suits strode into the room, their badges gleaming under the chandeliers. They walked directly toward Arthur, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs with practiced efficiency.

Eleanor backed away slowly, her gold sequined gown rustling against the marble floor, her eyes darting frantically toward the balcony doors as her final escape route vanished.
