Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass and the Bitter Truth

The heavy silver tray slipped from Maya’s trembling fingers, the sound of breaking crystal echoing like gunshots across the silent, glittering ballroom. Champagne splashed wildly, soaking the polished marble floor and splattering the pristine white hem of her maid’s apron. Around her, high-society chatter died instantly, replaced by the suffocating weight of dozens of judging eyes. Maya dropped instinctively to her knees, her hands hovering helplessly over the jagged shards of glass, tears blurring her vision as the humiliation burned hot and deep within her chest.

Standing directly above her, Eleanor Vance glared down with an expression of pure, unfiltered venom. Eleanor’s gold sequined evening gown shimmered under the crystal chandeliers, perfectly matching the harsh, unforgiving glint in her eyes. She adjusted her massive statement earrings, her voice cutting through the tense silence like a razor blade.

“Some people only belong here to serve,” Eleanor spat, her tone dripping with aristocratic disdain. “Do you know his gaze? How much that cost?”

Maya looked up slowly, her eyes swimming with unshed tears, her throat completely choked with raw emotion. She bypassed the furious socialite and turned her gaze toward the tall, imposing Black man standing quietly nearby in a tailored tuxedo.

“Dad,” Maya whispered, her voice trembling in the vast room. “I think we should go.”

Before Eleanor could process the startling word, Marcus Vance stepped forward with deliberate, crushing authority. He shrugged off his heavy black suit jacket, his movements calm and absolute, and gently draped the garment over his daughter’s shaking shoulders as she rose to her feet.

“She is my daughter,” Marcus stated, his voice a deep, resonant baritone that commanded the entire room.

Eleanor scoffed, crossing her arms tightly over her sequined bodice. “Oh, please. A billionaire’s daughter playing maid? What cheap stunt is this?”

Marcus ignored her insult completely, turning his gaze from Eleanor to a nervous man in a matching black suit lurking near the doorway—Arthur Pendelton, the foundation’s chief financial officer. At that exact moment, Eleanor’s phone buzzed violently in her hand. She glanced down at the screen, and the color instantly drained from her perfectly made-up face. She gasped aloud, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror as her jaw dropped slack.

Marcus stared coldly at the paralyzed woman. “Today reveals who has been stealing from this foundation.”

Eleanor stared at her glowing screen in absolute panic, her voice barely a terrified squeak. “They found the transfer records... Run.”
