Chapter 14 - The Final Truth

The violent accusation slammed into the quiet room like a physical blow, freezing everyone in their tracks. Maya stumbled back a half-step, her breath catching in her throat as her wide, tear-filled eyes snapped back to her father. The tactical agents paused, looking between Marcus and the thrashing prisoner, waiting for a command or a denial.
Marcus did not flinch, but the color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking older and more exhausted than he had all evening. He slowly turned his head to look at his daughter, the impenetrable armor he had worn for decades finally fracturing completely.
“Dad... tell me he’s lying,” Maya whispered, her voice trembling violently as the dark shadow of doubt threatened to consume everything she believed in. “Tell me you didn't know about the fire beforehand.”
Marcus closed his eyes, taking a long, shuddering breath before looking her dead in the eyes. “I didn't know it was going to happen that night, Maya. If I had known, I would have burned in that house right beside her.”
“That’s a lie!” Julian shrieked from the hallway, his voice echoing off the concrete walls as the agents hauled him further away. “Check the insurance payouts! Check the secondary beneficiary signatures from the week before the fire! He signed off on the risk assessment!”
The FBI Director frowned, looking down at the federal warrant folder in his hands. He slowly pulled out an older, yellowed document from the bottom of the stack—a certified risk assessment report stamped with the date of the fire. He glanced at the signature line at the bottom, then looked up at Marcus with a sharp, suspicious gaze.
“Mr. Vance,” the Director said slowly, his hand resting near his service weapon. “We need to examine these secondary beneficiary documents immediately. According to this federal archive copy, the primary policyholder was amended forty-eight hours before the incident.”
Maya stared at the Director, then back at her father, her heart shattering into a thousand irrecoverable pieces. The elaborate revenge plot, the glittering ballroom trap, the billions of dollars in physical assets—suddenly, all of it took on a terrifying, sinister new meaning. Had her father really spent twenty years hunting down his brother out of justice, or was he simply eliminating his co-conspirators to tie up loose ends?
Marcus looked down at the floor, his broad shoulders slumping as he slowly raised his hands toward the agents. He didn't offer a defense. He didn't make a speech. He simply met his daughter’s devastated gaze with a look of infinite, heartbreaking sorrow.

“Maya,” Marcus said softly, his voice breaking for the very first time. “I did everything I could to protect you from the monsters in this family. Even if that meant becoming one myself.”
