Chapter 2 - Shadows Closing In on the Ballroom

The frantic warning slipped from Eleanor Vance’s lips like a dying breath, freezing the remaining party guests in their tracks. Arthur Pendelton took one desperate step backward toward the mahogany double doors, his eyes darting frantically toward the exit like a cornered animal. The heavy silence of the ballroom transformed instantly into a suffocating vortex of panic. Wealthy donors and corrupt board members began murmuring among themselves, realizing that the digital noose was finally tightening around their collective necks.
Marcus Vance did not flinch. His tall, imposing frame blocked the primary exit, his steady gaze locked onto Arthur with terrifying precision. The custom tuxedo he wore could not hide the decades of hardened corporate warfare that had earned him his empire. He had spent the last six months letting these wolves believe they were starving him out, utilizing his own foundation as bait. Maya stood beside him, the heavy black jacket still draped around her shoulders, the warmth of her father’s protection steadying her nerves. The tears on her cheeks dried as the sheer magnitude of the trap snapped shut.
“You think you can just ruin us, Marcus?” Arthur stammered, his voice cracking as he fumbled inside his jacket for his own smartphone. “The board will never let you seize control. We have the majority vote by midnight!”
“Your majority vote expired at precisely eleven fifty-nine,” Marcus replied smoothly, stepping closer while the ambient classical music finally cut out completely. “And as for your control, Arthur, let’s just say your overseas accounts are currently experiencing some unexpected weather.”
Eleanor’s knees buckled slightly, forcing her to grab the edge of a nearby velvet-draped cocktail table to steady herself. Her gold sequined dress caught the harsh light of the flashbulbs from security cameras that had suddenly sprung to life around the perimeter of the room. She looked up at Marcus with a mixture of hatred and absolute desperation, her polished facade completely shattered.
“You orchestrated this whole charade,” Eleanor whispered, her voice shaking with rage. “You made your own flesh and blood crawl on this floor just to lure us into a false sense of security.”

Maya turned her head slowly, looking up at her father with a sudden, sharp intake of breath. The unspoken truth hung heavily between them, threatening to unravel everything she thought she knew about the man standing beside her.
