Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap Closes

The sharp click of the federal handcuffs securing Arthur Pendelton’s wrists echoed through the cavernous ballroom like a death knell for the corrupt elite. As the CFO was hauled unceremoniously to his feet and led toward the waiting agents, the remaining guests whispered anxiously among themselves, hastily distancing themselves from Eleanor Vance. She stood completely isolated near the front of the stage, her brilliant gold gown suddenly looking like a gilded cage.

Marcus watched the arrest with an expression of grim satisfaction. He turned his attention back to Eleanor, who was now trembling visibly as the cold reality of her impending ruin set in. The federal agents did not pause for pleasantries; one of them detached from Arthur’s escort and walked straight toward the terrified socialite, pulling out a second pair of gleaming cuffs.

“Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, and the illegal misappropriation of charitable trust funds,” the lead agent announced, his voice steady and devoid of emotion.

“This is a mistake! You can’t touch me!” Eleanor shrieked, lashing out wildly as the agent stepped into her personal space. “My family built this city! Marcus, you can’t do this to me! We go back twenty years!”

“We go back to when you first started treating human beings like disposable objects,” Marcus replied, his tone chillingly polite. “Twenty years ago, you ruined my late wife’s family business using these exact same predatory tactics. I promised myself then that I would spend the rest of my life ensuring you ran out of victims.”

Maya watched her father, a profound sense of awe mixing with the lingering shock of the evening. The man standing beside her was not just a billionaire philanthropist; he was a master tactician who had carried a generational grudge across decades, executing a patient, flawless revenge that prioritized justice over simple vengeance.

Eleanor was forced backward against a velvet pillar, the cold steel snapping around her delicate wrists. As the agents turned her toward the exit, her eyes locked onto Maya with pure, unadulterated hatred.

“You think you’ve won, you little bitch?” Eleanor spat, straining against the grip of the federal agents. “Your father’s empire is built on blood and secrets. He hasn't told you everything about what happened to your mother!”
