Chapter 3 - The Weight of a Billion-Dollar Secret

The revelation hung heavy in the electrified air of the ballroom, pressing down on Maya’s chest with suffocating force. She stared up at her father’s profile, searching his steady, unreadable eyes for answers. The black and white maid uniform she wore suddenly felt less like a clever disguise and more like a symbol of a painful manipulation she hadn’t consented to. Had he truly used her humiliation as bait to catch these corporate thieves? The thought sliced deeper than any broken glass ever could.

“Dad,” Maya said, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper that only he could hear. “Is it true? Did you know they would make me clean tables tonight?”

Marcus lowered his gaze, a flicker of genuine remorse softening the hard lines of his bearded face. He reached out, his large, warm hand resting gently on her shoulder, right over the fabric of his suit jacket.

“I knew they would try to humiliate whoever was assigned to this section,” Marcus murmured softly, his words guarded from the surrounding crowd. “I didn’t know it would be you, Maya. You insisted on taking this shift to prove you could earn your place independently. But when you stepped out there, I saw the exact moment they crossed the line. That was when I decided they would pay for every single tear.”

Before Maya could process the complex mixture of guilt and fierce paternal loyalty swirling inside her, Arthur Pendelton made his desperate move. With a sudden burst of adrenaline, the CFO lunged past Marcus toward the service hallway, shoving a stunned waiter out of his way.

“Stop him!” Eleanor screamed, abandoning all pretense of aristocratic composure as she pointed wildly toward the fleeing executive. “He has the physical hard drives in his briefcase! If he gets to the car, we are all going down for embezzlement!”

Two burly private security guards, previously disguised as catering staff, materialized from the shadows and tackled Arthur to the polished marble floor before he could reach the heavy brass doors. The briefcase flew from his grip, bursting open and scattering dozens of confidential financial documents across the floor.

Maya watched the chaos unfold, stepping away from her father’s protective embrace. She bent down, picking up a single piece of paper near her feet. Her eyes scanned the bold headers, and her breath caught in her throat. It wasn't just corporate embezzlement; the documents detailed the illegal diversion of funds meant for pediatric cancer research.
