Chapter 9 - The Fourteenth Floor

The metal steps of the emergency stairwell echoed with the frantic, deafening rhythm of Julian’s boots as he took them three at a time. His lungs burned with every breath of the cold, sterile stairwell air, and the soaked fabric of his white tuxedo felt like lead weights dragging him down. Fourteenth floor. The private bridal suite reserved for high-profile weddings and executive retreats.

When he reached the heavy fire door marked 14, he didn't bother knocking. He threw his shoulder against the reinforced wood, the latch splintering with a loud crack as the door swung violently inward, crashing against the interior wall.

The suite was vast, dimly lit by a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-slicked skyline of the city. In the center of the room, standing beside a grand piano, was Elena. Her strapless black evening gown was ruined, stained with water and soot, and her long dark hair was tangled across her shoulders. But she wasn't alone.

Standing a few feet away, holding a small silver pocket knife dangerously close to the delicate strap of Lily's light blue dress, was Chloe—Elena’s trusted assistant of six years. Chloe’s usually pristine blonde hair was pulled back into a severe bun, and her expression was terrifyingly calm, devoid of any panic.

"Stop right there, Julian," Chloe said, her voice steady and chillingly polite as she flicked the blade of the pocket knife outward. "One more step and I cut the dress. And let's just hope I miss the child's skin."

"Chloe, have you lost your absolute mind?" Julian snarled, freezing in his tracks just inside the doorway. He kept his hands raised palms-up, his eyes darting between Chloe’s steady hand and Elena’s terrified, tear-streaked face. "Put the knife down. You're looking at federal prison time for wire fraud, kidnapping, and corporate sabotage."

"Prison?" Chloe let out a short, cold laugh that lacked any real humor. "Julian, darling, prison is for amateurs who get caught by the regular police. I'm not going to prison. I'm taking my fifty million dollars and catching a private chopper from the roof helipad while you two idiots tear each other apart."

Elena stared at Chloe, her voice shaking with a mixture of betrayal and pure fury. "I trusted you, Chloe. I brought you into my home, I paid for your mother’s medical treatments, I gave you my absolute confidence."

"You gave me orders, Elena," Chloe snapped, her eyes flashing with sudden, bitter resentment. "You treated me like an expensive piece of office furniture while you played society queen with your diamond necklaces and your perfect little family. I built every single algorithm that made Vance Global rich, and you took all the credit."

"That money belongs to the venture fund," Julian reasoned carefully, taking a slow, imperceptible step forward. "You can't move fifty million without leaving a digital footprint that will track you to the ends of the earth. The DOJ already has the logs."

"The DOJ has whatever I programmed them to have," Chloe smiled, her thumb pressing lightly against the blade of the knife. "And right now, they have a signed confession from Elena admitting to the embezzlement, uploaded straight to the federal server from her own personal tablet."

Before Chloe could blink, Elena lunged forward with the speed of a striking cat, ignoring the danger to herself as she threw her body directly at Chloe’s arm, knocking the pocket knife spinning away across the polished hardwood floor just as the fourteenth-floor window shattered inward with an explosive blast of glass.
