Chapter 7 - The Figure in the Trench Coat

The closed-circuit monitor flickered with a static hiss, its green digital timestamp ticking forward with agonizing slowness. On the screen, the empty hallway outside the service elevator remained quiet for a beat, and then—exactly as the timestamp predicted—the elevator doors glided open. A tall, slender figure wearing a heavy black trench coat and a wide-brimmed hat stepped out onto the marble floor, carrying a brushed-aluminum silver briefcase.

Julian stared up at the monitor, his blood running cold as he compared the live feed to the empty space a few yards away. The hallway was completely empty. There was no elevator operating at this end of the wing; the service lift was located down the intersecting corridor.

"That's a pre-recorded loop," Julian whispered, his military instincts kicking in as he scanned the walls for hidden camera lenses. "They're staging the feed to force a reaction."

"No, Julian," Elena corrected, her voice barely audible over Lily's exhausted sobs. She pointed down the hall toward the recessed alcove where the fire hose cabinet was housed. "Look at the reflection in the glass."

Reflected in the heavy glass door of the fire hose cabinet, a tall silhouette was standing motionlessly in the shadows just six feet behind them.

The two police officers whirled around, their flashlights snapping on with a sharp click, cutting twin beams of blinding white light through the dim corridor. The beam illuminated a figure standing rigidly near the golden railing. It was a woman wearing a floor-length black trench coat, her face entirely obscured by a silk scarf wrapped tightly around her head and oversized dark sunglasses. In her right hand, she held an open laptop displaying lines of rapidly scrolling green code.

"Freeze! Police! Drop whatever you're holding!" the lead officer shouted, drawing his weapon and taking a tactical stance.

The figure in the trench coat did not drop the laptop. Instead, she hit a single enter key with her index finger. A loud, high-pitched tone echoed from the ceiling speakers throughout the entire hotel wing, followed by an automated robotic voice announcing: System purge complete. All local terminals wiped.

"Stop her!" Elena screamed, but her voice was drowned out as the overhead emergency sprinklers suddenly burst open without warning, unleashing a torrential downpour of cold water that drenched Julian’s white tuxedo and plastered Elena’s dark wavy hair against her face.

In the blinding chaos of the indoor rain, the figure in the trench coat spun around and threw a smoke canister onto the marble floor. A thick, acrid cloud of white smoke erupted instantly, filling the hallway with a choking haze that reduced visibility to zero.

"Elena! Take my hand!" Julian yelled over the roar of the water and the hiss of the smoke. He lunged forward through the blinding fog, his fingers brushing against the heavy silk of her black gown.

"I've got her! I have Lily!" Elena shouted back, her voice echoing desperately from somewhere inside the thick white cloud.

May you like

Julian reached out blindly, his hand closing around a small wrist, but as the smoke cleared just enough for him to blink the water from his eyes, he realized with a jolt of pure terror that he was holding onto the sleeve of an empty black trench coat left crumpled on the floor. Elena and Lily were gone.
