Chapter 8 - The Empty Trench Coat

The heavy white smoke hung suspended in the artificial rain, swirling lazily around Julian’s soaked shoulders as he stood alone in the center of the hallway. The white tuxedo jacket clung heavily to his skin, and his black bow tie was completely untied, hanging loosely around his collar. He stared down at the empty black trench coat crumpled on the marble floor like a discarded skin. The silver briefcase lay open beside it, entirely empty except for a single, flickering flash drive blinking with a malicious red light.

"Elena!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking as it ricocheted off the bare white walls and the gleaming gold railings. There was no answer, save for the steady, rhythmic roar of the overhead sprinklers dumping thousands of gallons of water onto the carpeted sections of the suite.

The two police officers emerged from the haze a few seconds later, coughing and wiping their eyes, their tactical flashlights cutting erratic beams through the mist.

"Mr. Vance, step away from the decoy," the lead officer ordered, raising his weapon again as he realized the suspects had vanished. "Where did she go? Which way did they take her?"

"I don't know!" Julian yelled, dropping to his knees beside the open briefcase and snatching the blinking flash drive. "They used a smoke bomb and a closed-circuit illusion. Someone inside this hotel is helping them."

"We checked the perimeter security logs," the second officer said, pressing his radio handset tighter against his ear as static hissed from the speaker. "All exits were locked down twenty minutes ago by order of the federal magistrate. Nobody could have left the building through the main lobby or the service bays."

"Then they're still inside," Julian said, his jaw tightening into a hard line as he stood up, the water dripping from his dark hair into his eyes. He looked down at the flash drive in his palm. A small, micro-etched logo on the casing caught the light—the private crest of Vance Global Logistics. It was his own company's internal encryption key, the one master code that could unlock every server room in their corporate headquarters downtown.

"Mr. Vance, you need to surrender that drive immediately," the officer warned, stepping forward with his cuffs ready. "It constitutes tampering with federal evidence."

"This drive contains the proof of who framed my wife," Julian said coldly, sliding the device deep into the waterproof lining of his inner jacket pocket. "If you want it, you'll have to arrest me."

Before the officer could lunge, the flickering red light on the flash drive suddenly turned solid green, and a tiny, built-in speaker on the casing emitted a burst of static followed by a recorded voice speaking in a calm, modulated whisper: Check the bridal suite on the fourteenth floor. Time is running out.

Julian didn't hesitate. Ignoring the police officers shouting behind him, he turned and sprinted toward the emergency stairwell door, his leather shoes slamming hard against the metal threshold as he wrenched the heavy fire door open and plunged upward into the dark, echoing stairwell.
