Chapter 1 - The Hollow Corridor

The heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom muffled the distant strains of a string quartet, leaving only the sterile acoustics of the executive suite hallway. Elena adjusted the sparkling diamond necklace that rested coldly against her collarbone, its facets catching the unforgiving glare of the recessed wall sconces. In her other hand, she held the tiny, damp palm of three-year-old Lily. The toddler’s light blue dress was slightly rumpled from an evening spent sleeping in a quiet coatroom while her parents played their high-stakes roles for the society pages. Lily stumbled, her white shoes scuffing the polished marble, and a fresh wave of high-pitched wailing broke from the child.
"Daddy!" Lily shrieked, her small body shaking with exhaustion and raw panic as she tried to pull away from Elena’s unyielding grip.
Down the expansive corridor, the sharp, rhythmic clack of leather-soled shoes announced Julian’s frantic approach. Dressed in his immaculate white tuxedo jacket and loosened black bow tie, his face was flushed with a mixture of terror and fierce possessiveness. He closed the distance between them with long, desperate strides, his eyes locked entirely on the sobbing child.
"Give me my daughter!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the high white walls and bouncing against the gleaming gold railings.
Elena planted her feet firmly, her strapless black evening gown rustling as she whipped her body around to shield the child. The diamonds at her throat caught the harsh light as she lifted Lily into her arms, her chest heaving with a suffocating mix of betrayal and exhaustion. Her face twisted into a mask of fierce, unadulterated fury.
"Always choose her!" Elena screamed back, her voice cracking with the weight of years of unspoken resentment and neglected promises.
Buried against Elena’s shoulder, Lily clutched desperately at the black silk of the gown, tears streaming down her flushed cheeks while her tiny frame shuddered with grief.
"Daddy!" the child sobbed again, her voice breaking the heart of every person within earshot.
Julian stopped just inches away, his hands hovering uselessly in the air, terrified to touch either of them for fear of shattering the fragile equilibrium. Lily pressed her face into the crook of Elena’s neck, her breath hitching as she looked past her mother's shoulder at Julian with wide, terrified eyes. In a tiny, trembling whisper that cut through the silence of the hallway, the little girl murmured.
"I'm scared."

Julian froze, his hand trembling as he reached into his tuxedo pocket and pulled out a folded manila envelope, slowly sliding it forward to reveal a court stamp that Elena had never seen before.
