Chapter 5 - The Sirens Below

The wail of the police sirens cut through the heavy air of the hallway, rising from the wet asphalt far below like a rising tide of inevitability. Behind the towering mahogany doors of the grand ballroom, the muffled chatter of hundreds of high-society guests dissolved into a cacophony of confused shouts and scrambling footsteps. Elena pulled Lily tighter against her chest, her dark hair sweeping across the toddler's face as she tried to shield her from the rising noise.

"Stay back, both of you!" Julian barked, stepping protectively in front of Elena and Marcus, his instincts as a former military intelligence officer overriding his personal shock. He scanned the hallway exits, noting the red emergency lights beginning to flash rhythmically near the service stairwell. "Marcus, take the service elevator down to the loading bay. Find out who called the authorities and secure our vehicle. If the accounts are frozen, our credit cards are likely blocked too."

"I'm not going anywhere until I know what's happening to the firm," Marcus protested, wiping his sweaty palms against his charcoal trousers. "If the DOJ has our books, we're looking at federal indictment before the sun comes up."

"Go!" Julian roared, the authority in his voice leaving no room for argument. Marcus flinched, turned sharply on his heel, and bolted toward the service lift, pressing the call button with a frantic, repetitive thumb.

Elena watched him go, her mind racing through the impossible web of accusations. Her personal holding company? The philanthropic trust? She had not accessed those accounts in over a year, ever since the birth board had been restructured during her maternity leave. Someone had forged her digital signature, and they had done it with surgical precision.

"Julian," Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh, breathless whisper as she met his wide, terrified gaze. "Listen to me very carefully. I didn't touch those funds. But whoever set this up knew every single password, every encryption key, and every corporate loophole we use."

"Which narrows the list down to two people," Julian replied bitterly, his shoulders slumping inside the tailored white jacket. "You and me."

"Or my brother," Elena countered sharply, a sudden, horrifying realization dawning on her. "Arthur has had proxy access to the holding company since my father’s funeral. He manages the family estate portfolios."

Julian let out a harsh, humorless laugh. "Arthur? Arthur couldn't balance a checkbook if his life depended on it. He spends his entire life dodging creditors in Monte Carlo."

"That's just it," Elena insisted, stepping forward despite the heavy silk of her gown restricting her movement. "He’s drowning in gambling debts, Julian. If someone offered him a way out by framing me..."

Before she could finish her sentence, the nearest wall sconce flickered violently and died, plunging the far end of the hallway into deep shadow. At the same moment, the heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom swung open, and two uniformed police officers stepped out into the corridor, their hands resting cautiously on the holstered weapons at their hips.

"Mr. and Mrs. Vance?" the lead officer called out, his voice echoing authoritatively against the bare white walls. "We have a warrant for your immediate questioning regarding corporate securities fraud and wire tampering."

Julian slowly raised his empty hands, stepping back to place himself directly between the approaching officers and Elena, who stood frozen with Lily trembling in her arms.

"I am Julian Vance," the man said steadily, his jaw set. "My wife and daughter are staying right here. What is the status of the ballroom?"

"The ballroom is locked down," the officer replied, pulling a digital tablet from his tactical vest and swiping the screen. "Nobody enters, nobody leaves. And Mr. Vance... you might want to look at this dispatch update. The Cayman Islands shell company just initiated a fifty-million-dollar wire transfer to an unlisted Swiss bank account registered under a single name."

Elena stopped breathing. "Whose name?" she whispered into the dimming corridor.

May you like

The officer looked up from his screen, his expression grim as he spoke the single word that sealed their fate. "Yours."
