Chapter 6 - The Swiss Ledger

The digital screen of the officer's tablet cast a harsh, bluish glow across Julian's face, highlighting the deep lines of stress etched around his eyes. Fifty million dollars. The sum was astronomical, representing the entire operating capital of Vance Global Logistics and every liquid asset they owned. Elena stared at the glowing interface, the diamond necklace around her neck feeling heavier by the second, like a millstone dragging her down into an abyss of betrayal.

"That's a lie," Elena breathed, her voice shaking violently as Lily began to cry again, picking up on the suffocating terror radiating from the adults. "I don't have a Swiss account. I've never even traveled to Zurich."

"The routing number is tied directly to your biometric corporate signature, Mrs. Vance," the officer stated flatly, stepping closer while his partner flanked them from the service exit. "The transfer was authorized three minutes ago, while we were standing right here in this hallway. Unless one of you is holding a rogue terminal, someone with root access is executing this live."

Julian spun around to face Elena, his eyes wide with a mixture of betrayal and desperate calculation. "Root access requires your biometric thumbprint and your private encryption key, Elena. The only other person who has a master duplicate of that key is... your personal assistant, Chloe."

"Chloe?" Elena’s eyes widened in genuine shock. "Chloe has been with me for six years. She’s practically family. She wouldn't know the first thing about offshore routing codes."

"People do desperate things when they're cornered," Julian muttered, his hand flying to his pocket to pull out his encrypted smartphone. The screen was completely black, locked out by a remote administrative override. "Dammit. They've locked my terminal too. We've been completely locked out of our own network."

The second police officer stepped forward, his hand hovering closer to his holster. "Mr. Vance, I must ask you to step away from Mrs. Vance and place your hands against the gold railing. We have orders to separate all subjects involved in high-level financial flight risk protocols."

"Stay away from us!" Elena screamed fiercely, clutching Lily so tightly to her chest that the toddler let out a sharp gasp of air. "You're making a catastrophic mistake! The real thief is still inside this building, probably watching us through one of these security cameras right now!"

"Step back, ma'am," the officer warned, his tone hardening as he unclipped his handcuffs. "That's an order."

Julian moved instantly, throwing his body between the advancing officer and Elena in a desperate defensive maneuver. "Don't touch her! I'll cooperate, just give us a minute to secure our daughter. Look at her—she's terrified!"

Lily buried her face deep into Elena’s black evening gown, her small shoulders shaking with hysterics as the flashing red emergency lights painted the hallway in alternating bands of crimson and shadow. The chaotic noise from the ballroom had quieted down, replaced by an eerie, suffocating silence that felt far more menacing than the shouting.

"Julian, look at the security monitor above the elevator," Elena whispered, her voice dropping to a terrified gasp as she pointed a trembling finger upward.

Julian jerked his head around. On the small, closed-circuit screen mounted near the ceiling, the live feed of the hallway was playing—showing them standing there, exactly as they were. But in the corner of the frame, timestamped thirty seconds in the future, the elevator doors opened, and a figure in a black trench coat stepped out, holding a silver briefcase and walking directly toward them.
