Chapter 10 - The Shattered Window

The explosion of shattering glass filled the bridal suite with a razor-sharp storm of glittering shards. Julian threw his arms over his head, shielding his face as a massive gust of wind and rain rushed into the room from the fourteenth-floor balcony, extinguishing the remaining wall sconces and plunging the suite into near-total darkness, illuminated only by the strobe-like flash of lightning outside.
Elena and Chloe tumbled hard onto the hardwood floor, wrestling in a tangle of ruined black silk and torn fabric. Elena managed to pin Chloe's wrists against the rug, her fingers digging into the carpet as she fought with the primal fury of a mother defending her child.
"Where is she?" Elena screamed over the howling wind, her dark hair whipping across her face as she pinned the assistant beneath her. "Where is Lily?"
Julian scanned the dim room through the driving rain. In the far corner near the balcony doors, a small, light-blue form was huddled behind an oversized velvet armchair. It was Lily. The toddler was clutching her white shoes in her tiny hands, her face buried against her knees as she shook uncontrollably, crying silently in absolute terror.
"Lily!" Julian shouted, sprinting across the slippery floorboards toward her, ignoring the broken glass crunching beneath his shoes. He dropped to his knees, scooping the trembling child into his arms and pulling her tightly against his soaked white tuxedo jacket. "I've got you, baby. Daddy's here. You're safe now."
Lily wrapped her tiny arms around Julian's neck so hard it cut off his breath, her small body wracked with deep, silent sobs. "Daddy... make it stop," she whispered against his collarbone, her voice so faint it was nearly swallowed by the storm.
On the floor a few yards away, Chloe managed to wrench one arm free, driving her elbow hard into Elena’s ribs. Elena gasped, losing her grip for a split second, which was all the assistant needed. Chloe scrambled backward toward the shattered balcony doors, panting heavily, blood trickling from a small scratch on her cheek.
"You think this is over?" Chloe sneered, wiping the blood away with the back of her hand as she stood up at the edge of the open balcony, the rain lashing her face. "The transfer to the Swiss account completed thirty seconds ago. The moment I cross that roof, the encryption locks permanently. You'll take the fall for every dime, Elena. Both of you will."
Before Julian could stand or reach for her, a dark helicopter swept up from the blind spot below the balcony, its powerful searchlight blindingly bright as it cut through the rain, illuminating the entire suite in stark white light. A masked figure standing in the open cabin door of the chopper extended a hand down toward Chloe.
"Don't let her go!" Elena yelled, struggling to her feet and lunging forward, but the rotor wash from the helicopter was too strong, blowing her back with the force of a hurricane wind.
Chloe grabbed the extended hand, hoisting herself smoothly over the balcony railing and up into the aircraft cabin as the pilot yanked the collective pitch, lifting the chopper up and away into the stormy night sky.

Elena stood frozen at the shattered edge of the balcony, the rain soaking through her torn black evening gown, her diamond necklace flashing one final time in the helicopter's fading searchlight before the aircraft vanished into the clouds. Julian stepped up beside her, holding Lily safely against his chest, and handed her something he had picked up from the floor where Chloe had fallen—a small, silver flash drive that didn't belong to the corporate network, but to Chloe's personal vault.
