Chapter 2 - The Manila Envelope

The stark red ink of the court seal stamped across the front of the manila envelope seemed to burn under the harsh hallway lights. Elena clutched Lily tighter against her chest, feeling the frantic, hummingbird thrum of the toddler's heartbeat through the light blue fabric of the dress. Julian kept his hand extended, the white fabric of his tuxedo jacket pulling taut across his broad shoulders as he forced himself to maintain a desperate, fragile composure.
"You can't do this here, Julian," Elena whispered, her voice dropping from its previous furious register into a dangerous, icy hum. "Not in a public hallway, and certainly not with her watching every breath we take."
"I had no choice," Julian breathed heavily, his chest rising and falling beneath the black bow tie. "You filed the emergency injunction yesterday afternoon, Elena. My legal team only managed to secure this stay an hour ago. If I hadn't intercepted you now, you would have boarded that private jet to Geneva by midnight, taking my daughter out of the country entirely."
Lily whimpered, wiping her tear-stained cheek against the black silk of Elena’s evening gown. The diamond necklace around Elena's throat pulsed with every rapid breath she took, a glittering reminder of the wealth that had initially bound them together and now threatened to tear their family apart.
"I was taking her to see my mother," Elena corrected bitterly, her dark wavy hair spilling over her bare shoulders like a heavy curtain. "My mother is recovering from heart surgery, Julian. She has every right to see her only granddaughter before things get any worse."
"Things are already as bad as they can possibly get," Julian said, his voice dropping to a gravelly register as he took a half-step forward. He didn't try to touch Lily, knowing the child’s current state of hysteria would only spike if he forced the issue. Instead, he kept his gaze fixed on Elena’s hardened eyes. "Read what's inside that envelope, Elena. It’s not just a custody stay. It’s an independent psychological evaluation ordered by Judge Sterling this morning."
Elena stared at the corner of the manila folder. Her fingers, usually so steady when managing boardrooms and charity galas, trembled slightly against Lily's back. The implication of an independent evaluation hung heavily in the air, threatening to dismantle the meticulous public image she and Julian had spent five years constructing.
"You brought the courts into our private lives," Elena said, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "You dragged our daughter into a legal battlefield just to protect your pride."
"To protect my daughter," Julian corrected fiercely, his jaw clenching. "Open it, Elena."

Elena slowly shifted Lily to one arm, her fingers reaching out to pinch the metal clasp of the envelope. As she pulled the brass prongs apart and slid the thick stack of legal stationery halfway out, a single attached photograph slipped free, fluttering down to land face-up on the marble floor between their expensive shoes.
