CHAPTER 9: Behind the Glass

Nathan looked disheveled. His expensive silk suit was wrinkled, his dark hair uncombed, and his eyes burned with manic desperation. He picked up the wall-mounted intercom phone.
Grace calmly picked up the receiver inside the vault.
"You really thought you could outrun me, Grace?" Nathan’s voice was smooth, but laced with venom. "You should have stayed under the bed. You should have drank your tea and drifted off like a good, quiet wife."
"Like Clara did?" Grace asked, her voice steady, looking directly into his eyes without flinching.
Nathan gave a cold, dismissive laugh. "Clara was reckless. She couldn't leave well enough alone. We built an empire, Grace. You could have lived a life of luxury forever. All you had to do was remain blind."
"It wasn't luxury, Nathan. It was a golden cage built on the blood of people you destroyed," Grace said. "Why kill us? Why not just take the money and leave?"
"Because your father’s will tied every cent to blood descendants," Nathan spat, tapping his finger against the bulletproof glass. "If you died naturally of illness, I inherited everything. If you disappeared, the trusts froze. It had to look clean."
"And you think Marcus can protect you now?" Grace asked.
"Marcus controls the narrative," Nathan sneered. "Right now, the police believe you broke in here armed. When the tactical team breaches that door, you won't survive the crossfire. A tragic end to a tragic breakdown."

Grace looked at him with profound pity. "You always underestimated Clara. And you never paid attention to how technology works."
