CHAPTER 5: The Vanguard Network

For the next three hours, the loft was quiet save for the rhythmic clatter of Miller’s mechanical keyboard. Grace sat beside him, translating Clara’s shorthand notes from the envelope.

The digital ledger unfolded like a modern web of tyranny. Nathan had used her family’s legacy foundation to clean over forty million dollars in illicit funds tied to real estate fraud, human exploitation, and municipal kickbacks. Every transaction was signed with a dual key: one held by Nathan, and the other belonging to Marcus Vance.

"This is bigger than embezzlement," Grace whispered, horrified by the names on the donor list. "They’re bribing city judges, housing directors, port authorities..."

"And they used your family name as the immaculate front," Miller added. "If this network collapsed without our intervention, Nathan would have framed you and Clara as the masterminds, walking away clean with twenty million in bearer bonds stored in the safe deposit vault at Sovereign Bank."

Suddenly, the red alert light on Miller’s router blinked furiously. A loud beep sounded from his monitor.

"We’ve been triangulated," Miller said, his tone dropping into icy urgency. "They bypassed the proxy."

Below the warehouse, the screech of tires echoed through the wet alleyway. Headlights swept across the frosted glass windows, casting long, predatory shadows against the ceiling.

"Nathan found us," Grace said, standing up without hesitation. "Where do we go?"

"The freight lift to the old coal tunnels," Miller commanded, grabbing a ruggedized hard drive. "Move!"
