CHAPTER 13: The Bridge of Memory

On a crisp October afternoon, Grace returned to Seattle. The city was bathed in amber autumn sunlight, the leaves of the maple trees glowing like embers along the sidewalks.

She visited the cemetery overlooking Puget Sound, where a granite headstone bore her sister's name: *Clara Sterling — Fearless and Beloved.*

Grace knelt beside the stone, placing a bouquet of white lilies near the base.

"We did it, Clara," Grace whispered. "The truth came out. Everything you fought for is alive."

She sat on the bench nearby for an hour, listening to the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant horn of a ferry crossing the bay. For eighteen months, this grave had been a site of unbearable confusion and suppressed sorrow. Today, it felt peaceful. The shadow of deceit had been lifted, replaced by an enduring legacy of justice and courage.

Julian Miller met her at the cemetery gates, wearing a clean coat and a warm, genuine smile.

"The foundation's first grant was approved today," Miller said, handing her a folder. "A team of young reporters in Chicago is exposing a predatory housing scheme. Clara would have loved them."

"She would have hired them on the spot," Grace chuckled softly.

"What's next for you, Grace?" Miller asked as they walked toward his car.

May you like

"Living," Grace replied, her voice steady and bright. "Without fear. Without looking under the bed."
