CHAPTER 2: Ghost in the Machine

The rain in downtown Seattle fell in sharp, icy needles. Grace kept her hood low as she walked briskly toward the industrial district along the waterfront. Her mind raced with disjointed memories: Nathan’s charming smiles, the extravagant dinners, his sudden insistence on managing her family's trust fund after Clara passed. He had isolated her with surgical precision, wrapping control in the guise of devotion.

She ducked into an all-night diner with peeling vinyl booths and the smell of burnt coffee. Sitting in a corner away from the windows, she plugged a generic USB adapter into her phone and slotted Clara’s micro SD card.

The files loaded. There were no emotional voice notes or diary entries—only hundreds of encrypted financial ledgers, corporate shell entities, and a single high-definition video timestamped two days before Clara’s death.

Grace plugged in her earphones and hit play. Clara appeared on the screen, looking exhausted, dark circles bruised beneath her eyes.

*"Grace, Nathan isn't just skimming from our family estate,"* Clara whispered into the camera, looking over her shoulder. *"He’s the money launderer for a syndicate called the Vanguard Group. When I found out, he tried to silence me. The drops he gives you—it's a slow-acting neurotoxin designed to mimic degenerative neurological failure. An autopsy would show natural organ exhaustion."*

Grace choked back a sob, gripping the edge of the laminate table. The realization hit her like an icy plunge: Nathan had never loved either of them. He had stalked their family for their wealth and their clean institutional reputation.

*"Find Julian Miller,"* Clara’s voice continued. *"He's an investigative journalist. He has the missing ledger keys. Don't fight for revenge, Grace. Fight to break the cycle."*
