Chapter 9: Healing the Home

Back at the mansion, the heavy silence that had once defined the hallways was slowly being replaced by the sounds of genuine life and domestic warmth. Victor had taken a leave of absence from his executive duties, choosing to work remotely from his home study so he could be present for every milestone in Ethan’s daily routine. The nursery had been redecorated; gone were the sterile, minimalist grey tones that Elena had insisted upon, replaced with cheerful pastel colors, warm wooden bookshelves filled with classic children’s stories, and a plush new rug where Ethan could crawl safely. Martha moved about the estate with a newfound lightness in her step, her authority respected and her dedication rewarded. One afternoon, while Ethan was napping upstairs, Victor joined Martha in the spacious kitchen for a cup of coffee. The afternoon sun streamed through the sparkling windows, illuminating the gleaming marble countertops. "You know, Martha, I don't think I've properly thanked you for saving my son's life," Victor said sincerely, leaning against the counter. Martha offered a gentle, self-deprecating smile, stirring her tea. "You don't need to thank me, Mr. Sterling. I was just doing what any decent human being should do. The real work is watching him laugh again. For a long time, that little boy forgot how to smile." Victor nodded, his expression softening as he looked toward the baby monitor on the kitchen island. "It’s amazing how resilient children are once the toxic environment is removed. He’s already sleeping better, eating better, and starting to string syllables together." Martha placed her cup down and looked at Victor thoughtfully. "The hardest part is behind us, sir. But we must remain vigilant. Mrs. Sterling’s legal team will surely try to appeal the custody ruling before the trial begins." Victor’s jaw tightened, determination flashing in his eyes. "Let them try. Every asset, every document, and every second of footage is locked down. She won't win."
