Chapter 2: Shadows of Suspicion

The cold autumn wind continued to howl outside the grand arched windows of the Sterling estate, casting long, shivering shadows across the marble floor. Victor stood by the arched entrance, holding little Ethan close to his chest. The infant had finally drifted into an uneasy sleep, his tiny fists still clenched tightly in exhaustion. Victor’s mind raced through the ruins of his marriage. Elena had been escorted to the private sitting room down the east wing by the younger of the two police officers, her haughty defiance momentarily checked by the presence of the law. Yet, Victor knew her too well; Elena never truly panicked—she only strategized. He looked down at Martha, who was slowly rising from the floor with the help of the senior officer. "You are safe here, Martha," Victor assured her quietly. "No one is going to harm you or blame you for what transpired today." Martha nodded slowly, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. "Mr. Sterling, it wasn't just today," she whispered, glancing nervously down the long corridor. "There were other times. Small things. Cold things. She never struck him with her hands, but her words... her absolute indifference toward the boy. It broke my heart every single day." Victor felt a cold pit form in his stomach. He remembered how meticulously Elena had curated their public image, always playing the doting mother whenever guests or business associates visited. But behind closed doors, away from the cameras and society galas, a darker reality had festered. The officers requested a brief walk-through of the security camera feeds located in the estate’s central monitoring room. Victor agreed immediately, handing Ethan back to Martha with explicit instructions to take the boy to the nursery and lock the door from the inside. As Victor walked toward the security office, the sheer weight of his impending confrontation with Elena settled heavily upon his shoulders. The evidence was right there on the hard drives, waiting to dismantle the empire of lies Elena had so carefully built over the past three years.
