Chapter 6: Picking Up the Pieces

The next morning brought a stark, sobering daylight to the Sterling estate. The media had not yet caught wind of the arrest, thanks to Detective Vance’s discretion and Victor’s swift intervention with local public relations firms, but the emotional fallout within the mansion walls was palpable. Victor sat at the massive mahogany dining table, a cup of black coffee cooling untouched beside his plate. He stared out the French doors toward the manicured gardens, his mind replaying the devastating revelations of the past twenty-four hours. Martha entered the dining room quietly, pushing a small wooden trolley holding a fresh pot of tea and a bowl of sliced fruit for Ethan, who was wide awake and babbling happily in a high chair. "Good morning, Mr. Sterling," Martha said softly, hesitation evident in her voice. Victor turned his gaze toward her, offering a weary, appreciative smile. "Good morning, Martha. Please, sit down for a moment. We need to talk." Martha looked surprised but complied, pulling out a chair opposite him. "I want to apologize," Victor began, his voice thick with emotion. "As the head of this household, I should have seen the signs. I was so consumed by expanding the business that I trusted the wrong person entirely. You protected my son when I failed him." Martha shook her head gently. "You couldn't have known, sir. Mrs. Sterling was a master of deception. She wore a different face whenever you were in the room." Victor nodded slowly, acknowledging the truth in her words. "Well, that deception is over. My lawyers have already filed for emergency full custody and initiated divorce proceedings based on criminal neglect. Elena will not set foot in this house again." He paused, looking at Ethan, who was now tossing a plastic spoon onto the floor with a delighted giggle. "Martha, I want to formally ask you to stay on—not just as a nanny, but as the head of household management. I need someone I can trust completely to help me rebuild this home into a place of warmth, safety, and genuine love."
