Chapter 11: The Desperate Ploy

Confined to the county detention center while awaiting trial, Elena grew increasingly desperate as her legal options dwindled. Denied access to her high-society network and realizing that her high-priced defense attorneys were failing against Sarah Jenkins’ airtight presentation of evidence, she decided to orchestrate one final, reckless move. Through a sympathetic prison guard whom she had manipulated with promises of future financial rewards, Elena managed to smuggle out a handwritten letter addressed directly to Victor. The letter was delivered to the mansion late Friday evening by an unmarked courier. Victor sat at his desk, breaking the wax seal with a letter opener. The handwriting was frantic, completely unlike Elena’s usual controlled script. “Victor, please,” the letter began. “Drop the criminal charges and agree to a quiet settlement. If you destroy me publicly, the media will dig into the Sterling Enterprises overseas accounts, and your own reputation will suffer collateral damage. Let’s settle this privately for Ethan’s sake.” Victor read the words with cold detachment. It was a classic extortion attempt disguised as a plea for familial peace. There was no mention of remorse, no concern for the trauma inflicted upon their son—only a frantic self-preservation instinct wrapped in thinly veiled threats. Victor tossed the letter onto his desk with a heavy sigh. He walked over to the secure wall safe, placed the letter inside alongside the hidden ledger, and locked it firmly. He picked up his phone and dialed Detective Vance. "Detective, I received a contraband communication from the prisoner attempting witness tampering and extortion," Victor reported calmly. "I am sending a digital copy to your office immediately. Please ensure her communications are thoroughly monitored." Victor hung up, feeling not a shred of pity, only a resolute desire to close this dark chapter of his life once and for all.
