Chapter 4: The Mask Slips

The private sitting room was elegantly decorated with velvet armchairs and antique mahogany furniture, yet the atmosphere inside was thick with tension. Elena sat regally on a cream-colored sofa, her royal blue dress neatly arranged around her knees, her dark hair cascading perfectly over her shoulders. She looked up as Victor and Detective Vance entered, her expression shifting instantly from cold annoyance to fragile concern. "Victor, darling," she began, her voice dripping with practiced sweetness. "Please tell these men to leave. This misunderstanding has gone far enough. That wretched nanny dropped Ethan herself and tried to blame me to save her own job." She stood up, smoothing her dress, and took a step toward her husband with outstretched hands. Victor did not flinch, nor did he take her hands. He simply stood tall, his gaze piercing through her theatrical display. "The cameras don't lie, Elena," Victor said, his voice dangerously quiet. "I just watched the footage. I saw you drag our son across the marble floor by his clothing. I saw your face. There was no confusion, no accident. Just cold, unadulterated cruelty." Elena’s hands froze mid-air. For a split second, the polished mask slipped, revealing the calculating, venomous predator beneath. Her lips parted, not in sorrow, but in a sneer of pure contempt. "You fool," she hissed, dropping the innocent act entirely. "You think some footage of a fussy brat is going to ruin my life? I am an elite member of this society. People like you don't throw away women like me over a minor domestic squabble." Detective Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of metallic handcuffs from his belt. "Mrs. Sterling, you are being detained for child endangerment and willful neglect. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law." Elena’s eyes widened not with tears of remorse, but with absolute disbelief that the world was finally holding her accountable. She struggled briefly as the cuffs clicked into place, her voice turning shrill as she screamed empty threats of retaliation.
