Chapter 10: The Hidden Ledger
While reviewing old financial documents in the mansion's private study to prepare for the upcoming depositions, Victor made a startling discovery. Tucked away in a locked compartment of an antique mahogany desk that had belonged to Elena’s family was a hidden leather-bound ledger. Curious, Victor carried the ledger over to his desk lamp and began turning the heavy parchment pages. The entries were written in Elena’s precise, elegant handwriting, detailing transactions spanning several years. However, these were not ordinary household expenses; they were a meticulous record of extortion, payoffs, and systematic manipulation. Elena had been quietly embezzling funds from various Sterling Enterprises charity foundations and funneling them into offshore accounts, using compromised former employees as silent accomplices. Even more disturbing was a series of personal notes outlining a long-term plan to discredit Victor in the event of a divorce, ensuring she could seize controlling shares of the corporation. Victor felt a cold fury rise within him, quickly tempered by analytical clarity. This ledger wasn't just a personal betrayal; it was a smoking gun of financial crimes that extended far beyond domestic abuse. He immediately digitized every single page using his flatbed scanner, backing up the files onto encrypted cloud storage and a physical thumb drive that he tucked securely inside his breast pocket. He called Sarah Jenkins immediately, briefing her on the new evidence. "This changes everything, Victor," Sarah said over the secure line, her voice laced with professional excitement. "This isn't just about custody anymore. This is rackhetoneering and grand larceny. The prosecutors will love this. Her defense strategy is completely dismantled." Victor hung up the phone, looking out the study window into the deepening twilight. The web of deceit that Elena had woven around his life was finally unravelling thread by thread, exposing the dark architecture of her ambition.
