Chapter 8 - The Voice on the Line

The harsh, artificial crackle of static echoed from the small speaker of Julian’s satellite phone, cutting sharply through the roaring sound of the distant fire consuming his mansion. Clara pulled shivering little Lily closer into her chest, hiding the toddler’s face against her shoulder to block out the blinding orange glow reflecting off the dense forest canopy.

Julian held the phone to his ear, his expression hardening into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. The tattoos on his neck stood out in sharp relief against his pale skin.

"I know you're listening, Vance," a smooth, digitally altered voice drawled through the encrypted channel. "Did you really think a domestic drainage pipe and a loyal old housekeeper would be enough to slip the leash of the Scorpion Syndicate?"

"Name your price," Julian barked, his voice dropping into a harsh, commanding register that brooked no argument. "The offshore accounts are fully accessible. Take the capital, take the real estate, take every penny I own. Just let my family walk away."

A low, mocking chuckle echoed from the device. "Money is just numbers on a screen, Julian. We didn't hunt you down across three continents for your bank accounts. We came for the hard drive. And more importantly, we came to settle a blood debt."

Clara’s heart seized. She stared at Julian in horror, realizing that his grand confession back in the dining room hadn't been the whole truth. He hadn't just stolen money; he had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed, and now the price was far higher than he had ever admitted.

"What else did you take from them, Julian?" Clara hissed, her voice trembling with a mixture of terror and betrayal as she stared at her husband in the flickering firelight.

Julian didn't answer her. He kept his eyes locked on the burning ruins of his home, his thumb rhythmically tapping against the side of the satellite phone.

"You have twelve hours to bring the hard drive to the old shipping yards at Pier 42," the synthesized voice continued smoothly. "If you try to contact local authorities, or if you fail to show up alone, we start hunting down your former associates one by one—starting with that dear old woman who just tried to buy you time."

"Higgins," Clara gasped, a sob escaping her lips. "They have Higgins."

"Higgins is currently enjoying a cup of very bitter tea," the voice mocked lightly before the line went dead with a sharp, final click.

Julian slowly lowered the phone, his shoulders slumping for a fraction of a second before his ironclad discipline locked back into place. He turned to Clara, his dark eyes fierce and uncompromising.

"We need to move," Julian said, reaching down to hoist Lily into his arms. "The forest trail leads to an old hunting cabin three miles north. We’ll shelter there while I retrieve the drive."

"Retrieve it? From where?" Clara demanded, planting her feet firmly in the wet moss. "You left the briefcase in the study, Julian! The house is burning to the ground!"

Julian stared at her, a chilling, desperate smile touching his lips as he reached inside his jacket and pulled out a heavy, steel-framed hard drive wrapped in waterproof plastic—the exact one from the desk.

"I never leave vital intelligence where an enemy can find it," Julian said quietly. "Now, run."
