Chapter 1 - The Broken Plate

The cold surface of the Italian marble floor pressed hard against Clara's knees as she stared down at the scattered scrambled eggs. Three-year-old Lily stood beside her, a beige knitted cardigan hanging loosely over her small shoulders, chewing quietly on a single bite of food. In the doorway of the grand foyer, Julian stood tall and imposing, his dark suit vest straining slightly across his chest. Rich, intricate tattoos crawled up his thick neck and disappeared beneath the crisp collar of his shirt. His jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle twitched near his temple.

Clara slowly lifted her gaze from the porcelain plate on the floor to meet her husband’s cold, unyielding stare. The weight of his harsh decree still hung heavy in the vaulted hallway.

"If she behaves like an animal, she eats like one," Julian said again, his voice dropping into a low, menacing register that echoed off the high ceilings.

Clara swallowed hard, her chest tightening with a suffocating blend of fear and rising fury. She pushed herself up from the marble, her cream-colored dress smoothing out as she squared her shoulders.

"She is three years old, Julian," Clara said, her voice trembling slightly before steadying into a sharp, defensive edge. "She dropped her breakfast. It was an accident. This is completely insane."

Julian didn't flinch. He took two slow, deliberate steps forward, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the stone.

"An accident is spilling water, Clara. Throwing her plate across the room and screaming until the glass shatters is defiance," Julian snapped, pointing a thick, tattooed finger toward the scattered food. "My father broke me of that spirit early. It is the only way she will survive the world we built."

"We didn't build a world, Julian! You built a prison!" Clara shouted, stepping directly between him and the frightened toddler. "Look at her! You are terrifying your own daughter!"

Julian stared down at his wife, his dark eyes devoid of warmth. He reached out, his heavy hand gripping Clara's wrist with brutal, controlled force.

"Lower your voice in my house," Julian whispered, leaning in close so that his breath brushed her ear. "Or next time, you will be eating off that floor right beside her."

Before Clara could pull away or fire back another retort, a sharp, metallic ring cut through the tense silence of the hallway. Julian slowly released her wrist, pulled a heavy vintage pocket watch from his vest pocket, and flipped the silver cover. His eyes widened just a fraction, a micro-expression of pure panic flashing across his stone face before he snapped the watch shut and bolted toward the study without another word.
