Chapter 10 - The Ambush in the Woods

The cabin plunged into absolute, suffocating silence. Julian extinguished the tactical flashlight with a swift click, plunging the room into darkness save for the pale moonlight filtering through the dusty windowpanes. He drew his silenced pistol from its concealed holster with practiced, fluid ease, moving with the terrifying efficiency of a seasoned predator.

"Stay with Lily," Julian whispered, his lips barely moving as he pressed himself flat against the log wall beside the heavy wooden door.

Clara scrambled across the splintered floorboards, dropping to her knees beside the cot where little Lily slept fitfully. She pulled the thick wool blanket up around the toddler’s chin, her heart hammering so violently against her ribs that she was certain the intruders outside could hear it.

A heavy thump struck the exterior cabin wall, followed by the low, muffled murmur of voices speaking in harsh, rapid Spanish. They weren't just tracking them; they had anticipated their retreat to the northern ridge.

Creak.

The rusted iron drop-bar on the door rattled as someone tested the latch from the outside. Julian gripped his pistol tighter, his knuckles turning white, his eyes locked on the wooden portal. The Syndicate operatives weren't going to knock; they were clearing the cabin room by room.

Suddenly, the heavy glass of the side window shattered into a thousand glittering shards as the butt of a carbine smashed through the frame. A heavily armed operative in matte-black tactical gear lunged through the opening, his weapon swinging toward the cot where Lily lay sleeping.

Time seemed to fracture, stretching out into agonizing slow motion.

Julian didn't hesitate. He pivoted with terrifying speed, raising his pistol and firing two suppressed rounds into the shadows. The muffled thuds blended seamlessly with the rustle of the wind outside. The operative dropped instantly, collapsing heavily against the splintered floorboards beneath the shattered window.

Before Julian could cycle a fresh round, the front door exploded inward as a heavy kick shattered the rotting wood frame. Two more tactical operatives poured into the cramped cabin, their night-vision goggles casting an eerie green glow across their masked faces.

"Drop the weapon, Vance!" one of them barked in a distorted digital growl.

Julian raised his pistol, but the tactical advantage was entirely gone; the barrel of an assault rifle was already leveled directly at his chest, locked onto his center mass.

"I have what you came for," Julian said, his voice unnaturally calm as he kept his left hand firmly gripping the steel hard drive inside his jacket pocket. "Take the drive. Let my wife and child walk."

May you like

The lead operative stepped forward, lowering his rifle just an inch as a cruel grin stretched across his exposed lower face. "The boss didn't say anything about letting witnesses walk, Julian. We take the drive, and then we burn the forest to the ground."
