Chapter 3 - The Cold Discovery

The sharp, metallic click of the secondary door freezing in place made Clara’s blood run cold. She pulled her hand back from the leather briefcase as if she had touched a live wire, spinning around to face the intruder. But it wasn't Julian. Standing in the doorway connecting the study to the master bedroom was Mrs. Higgins, the elderly housekeeper who had served Julian’s family for over three decades. Her silver hair was pulled back into a severe bun, and her pale eyes stared unblinkingly at Clara.
Mrs. Higgins didn't scream, nor did she look surprised. Instead, she slowly closed the interior door, locking it with a soft turn of the brass key.
"You shouldn't be poking around in the master's private affairs, Mrs. Vance," the old woman said, her voice flat, carrying an eerie calmness that cut deeper than Julian’s rage.
"He’s hiding something, Higgins," Clara whispered fiercely, keeping her voice low so it wouldn't carry to the other side of the room where Julian was still finishing his frantic phone call. "There are passports, burner cards, things that don't belong to a normal businessman. What is he running from?"
Mrs. Higgins took a slow step forward, her apron rustling against her stiff black skirt. She glanced briefly at the open briefcase on the mahogany desk before returning her chilling gaze to Clara.
"Mr. Vance protects this household in his own way," Mrs. Higgins replied, her tone devoid of warmth. "Some doors are locked for a reason. If you open them, the monsters inside don't just hurt you—they devour the child upstairs."
Before Clara could demand an explanation for the veiled threat, the primary study door swung open wide. Julian stood in the frame, his face flushed, the burner phone clutched so tightly in his fist that his knuckles turned ghostly white. He froze when he saw the two women standing close together near the desk, his eyes darting from Mrs. Higgins’s stone face to Clara’s panicked expression.
"What is happening here?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into that terrifying, quiet register that usually preceded a storm.
Mrs. Higgins bowed her head slightly, stepping smoothly in front of the desk. "I simply came to inform Mr. Vance that the evening meal is being prepared, sir. And I found Mrs. Vance looking for her dropped necklace near the bookshelves."
Julian stared at the housekeeper for a long, agonizing moment, searching her face for any sign of betrayal. Then, his dark eyes snapped to Clara. He slowly walked forward, closing the distance between them until she could smell the expensive bourbon and ash on his breath.
"Did you find your necklace, Clara?" Julian asked softly, lifting a heavy tattooed hand to trace a cold finger down the side of her neck, right over her racing pulse.

Clara held her breath, staring defiantly into his dark eyes as she realized the old housekeeper had just covered for her—or trapped her in a web of lies from which there was no escape.
